High Desert Sports Roundup: Victor Valley beats Barstow to begin Desert Sky League play

The Victor Valley baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak in the Desert Sky League opener against Barstow on Tuesday afternoon.

The Jackrabbits beat Barstow 13-6 at home behind 6 ⅔ innings of work on the mound from Jerry Avila, and a six-RBI effort from Rafael Cabrera.

Ben Seidenkranz recorded the final out for Victor Valley.

Avila, Jadon Gonzalez and Eli Castera each recorded a hit, and Emilio Sbolci cranked a home run.

Cabrera, a junior, led the offense with three hits.

Victor Valley is 3-9 on the season, and 1-0 in DSL play. The Jackrabbits are back in action Thursday on the road against Granite Hills.

Barstow (4-8, 0-2 DSL) is also in action on Thursday in a nonleague game at home against Silver Valley.

Prep Baseball

Riverside Prep 10, Silverado 4

At Oro Grande, the Silver Knights improved to 9-3 on the season with a victory at home over the Hawks on Tuesday.

Riverside Prep jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, and Silverado struck back with four runs in the fourth inning. But Riverside Prep scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Cayden Johnson led the charge for the Silver Knights by going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs; Cayman Pluma went 2 for 4 with a RBI, a run and two stolen bases; and Adrian Jorge Jr. went 1 for 3 with a RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.

For Silverado, Brandon Chavez and Devin Lane both had a hit and drove in a run.

Silverado is back in action on the road Thursday against Adelanto. The Silver Knights are off until March 19 against Granite Hills.

Adelanto 6, Granite Hills 3

At Apple Valley, the Saints rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to beat the Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.

Adelanto jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a run-scoring single from Chris Espinoza. Granite Hills took a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning and held on until the seventh, when the Saints struck for five runs.

Zachary Viramontes picked up the victory on the mound. He struck out 10 batters and allowed three earned runs on eight hits. After the Saints took the lead in the seventh inning, Viramontes made quick work with a quick pop out, followed by two strikeouts to end the game.

Espinoza ended the day 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three stolen bases; Jesse Najera went 2 for 2 with a RBI, a run and a stolen base; Daniel Fernandez went 2 for 3 with two RBIs; and Aaron Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a RBI.

For Granite Hills, Van Skinner went 2 for 4; Caden Wharton went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run; and Kameron Tillis-Henriquez went 2 for 2 with a run and a stolen base.

Both teams are back in action Thursday with home games. Adelanto hosts Silverado, and Victor Valley heads to Granite Hills.

Hesperia Christian 14, AAE 0

At Hesperia, Arlan Koester cranked a two-run home run to help lead the Patriots in a shutout on Tuesday afternoon.

Koester started on the mound and struck out six batters and allowed four hits over four innings of work.

Luke Beasley went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, a run and a stolen base; Kaleb Lewis went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run; Ayden Ortega went 1 for 3 with two runs and two stolen bases; and Caleb Audet went 1 for 3 with a RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

The Patriots (6-1) head to West Covina on Thursday afternoon.

Prep Softball

Sultana 7, Rancho Cucamonga 6

At Hesperia, Maria Perez cranked a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Sultans to victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Rancho Cucamonga broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth inning with two runs. Sultana rallied back for the win.

Jordan Mullinax singled and then scored on a double from Isabella Avalos. Perez stepped up to the plate and then clubbed the 1-1 pitch over the left field fence.

Perez ended the game 2 for 4 with a walk, two RBIs and a run. Avalos went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs.

In the circle, Savannah Vanderpool pitched all nine innings. She allowed five earned runs on 12 hits, and struck out 12 batters.

Granite Hills 14, Adelanto 0

At Adelanto, the Cougars racked up 22 hits on Tuesday afternoon and improved to 2-0 in Desert Sky League action.

Mia Vazquez struck out four batters and allowed four hits over five innings to pick up the win. At the dish, Vazquez went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Jazmine Gonzalez went 3 for 4 with two RBIs; Emily Marks went 3 for 4 with four RBIs; Kathryn McCartney went 3 for 4 with a run; and Alina Salgado went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs.

Granite Hills (8-4-1) is on the road again Thursday against Victor Valley.

Apple Valley 11, Silverado 1

At Victorville, Brynne Johnson struck out seven batters and allowed six hits over seven innings to lead the Sun Devils past the Hawks on Tuesday.

At the plate, she went 1 for 3 with two walks, a RBI and two stolen bases.

Bethany Morrison went 2 for 3 with two triples, two walks, three RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases, and Hailey Macias went 1 for 3 with two walks, a RBI, three runs and two stolen bases.

For Silverado, Haylee Stanislawski went 2 for 3, and Alexis Rodriguez went 1 for 2 with a run; and Alex Valdez went 1 for 3 with a stolen base.

Silverado (2-6) heads to Adelanto on Thursday, while Apple Valley (8-5) is back home on Saturday against Highland.

Serrano 4, Eisenhower 1

At Rialto, Charlotte Ellis struck out five batters and allowed five hits over seven innings to lead the Diamondbacks to victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Cody Ramirez led the offense by going 2 for 3 with two triples, three RBIs and a stolen base; Jamie Motley went 2 for 4 with two runs; Samantha Conan went 2 for 3 with a run; and Wendy Arauz went 2 for 4.

Serrano (5-6) is back on the road Thursday against Hesperia.

Academy for Academic Excellence 15, Academy of Careers & Exploration 3

At Helendale, Kayla Berg and Emily Garcia each racked up four hits in a big victory over the Eagles on Tuesday afternoon.

Berg led the offense by going 4 for 5 with a home run, four RBIs, three runs and a stolen base, while Garcia went 4 for 5 with three runs.

Haylee Berg went 2 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases. Aiden Carlson struck out eight batters and allowed two earned runs on eight hits and two walks. At the plate, Carlson went 2 for 3 with two walks, three RBIs, a run and a stolen base.

For ACE, Kamie Costa went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Prep Boys Tennis

Hesperia 11, Serrano 7

At Hesperia, the Scorpions pulled off a victory over the Diamondbacks in the Mojave River League opener on Tuesday afternoon.

Hesperia got sweeps in doubles action from the teams of Eziekiel Felix and Trever Call (6-3, 6-1, 6-0), and Jacob Gonzales and Dylan Mendieta (6-1, 7-5, 6-0).

The Diamondbacks got sweeps in singles action from Tarik Toury (6-3, 6-0, 6-2) and Richard Macomber (6-2, 6-0, 6-3).

Hesperia Singles

Velasquez 3-6, 6-3, 3-6; Montano 2-6, 0-6, 6-1; Valentin 7-5, 0-6, 2-6.

At Adelanto, the Hawks improved to 3-0 in Desert Sky League action with a victory over the Saints.

Silverado got sweeps in singles action from Christian Sauceda (6-0, 6-2, 6-1) and Ricardo Lemuz (6-1, 6-4, 6-3), along with the doubles team of Mark Maradiaga and Donovan Smith (6-2, 6-2, 6-1).

The Hawks (5-1-1) are back in action Thursday at home against Barstow.
