Heuvelton, Lisbon cruised into Dinneen Tourney title game

Nov. 29—MADRID — Heuvelton and Lisbon used uptempo starts to gain a decided lead and cruised into Thursday night's championship game of the John Dinneen Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament.

Heuvelton's remake of its starting lineup enjoyed a smooth debut on Tuesday as the Bulldogs broke away from an early 7-5 lead to a 17-6 first quarter spread and were never headed on their way to a 70-32 win over host Madrid-Waddington. Sparked by 12 first quarter points by all-purpose forward Cooper Rutherford, Lisbon took an 18-3 first quarter lead, forged a 22-13 margin in the second quarter and won its second straight game 57-38.

In nonleague Girls Baskeball action played Monday Lisbon downed Watertown IHC 58-41.

Heuvelton 70 — M-W 32: Tony Tacchino and Rhys Brossoit emerged as the HCS leaders in the pivot and at point as the second unit of last year's team moved to the forefront. Tacchino tallied a game-high 24 points with smooth pull-up shots in the paint, second chance conversions on the offensive glass and pick-and-role collaborations with Brossoit who tallied 21 points.

Tacchino scored 10 points in the third quarter and Brossoit and Cam Johnson both dropped in seven in a 26-9 run. Johnson finished with 15 points and Israel Paradise supplied an early spark with five points in the first quarter. Landyn Ashlaw and Arik Roane added three and five points.

Jacob Mayette netted two 3s leading M-W with 11 points and Tyree Hawkins and Jamison Zysik followed with six and five points. Corbin Durant converted two tough inside shots in the fourth quarter for four points and Cole Smith, Hayden Amo Kolby Todd all added two.

Lisbon 57 — E-K 38: Cooper Rutherford pilfered the lane off the dribble, offensive rebounds and off post-up moves scoring 22 of his 31 points in the first half where Lisbon built a 40-16 lead and contained the Cougars with constrictive defense inside and on the perimeter. Connor Flack tallied nine points Connor Bell and AJ Donaldson followed with seven and six. Alex Vesel and Isaiah White each chipped in two points.

E-K used a fullcourt press to compete much better in the second half and received 14, 10 and nine points from Kale Greer, Dawson Matthews and Cooper Allen. Caleb Robinson and Jacob Morrill added three and two points.
