Heuvelton edges Lisbon in OT for title; H-D wins, Lisbon Girls Falls

Dec. 1—MADRID — Heuvelton Central Coach Josh McAllister entered Thursday's finals of Madrid-Waddington's Central's John Dinneen Boys Basketball Tournament eager to see how his cast of first year starters could handle championship game pressure.

He was very excited after the Bulldogs secured a 63-58 overtime win after never having the lead at any point of regulation.

"We faced every kind of pressure you can face. We played a very good team in Lisbon which pressured us on defense, we were behind the whole game until overtime, we had foul trouble, we had to overcome turnovers and Lisbon received an outstanding game from Cooper Rutherford," said Coach McAllister after the Bulldogs went 6-8 from the foul line in overtime and earned an overtime reprieve with a 19-13 advantage in the fourth quarter.

"We struggled but we made shots we had to in the fourth quarter and overtime and we made our free throws in the overtime."

Host M-W won the consolation game 51-36 over Edwards-Knox.

Heuvelton 63 — Lisbon 58 OT: Cam Johnson converted three driving conversions in the lane and Tony Tacchino scored two equalizers in the fourth quarter after Cooper Rutherford converted two athletic follow-ups on his own shots scoring eight of game-high 24 points points in the third quarter leading th Lisbon to a 38-32 lead.

Heuvelton pulled into its first tie of the second half at 44-44 when Tacchino converted a putback.

AJ Donaldson and Rutherford buried 3-pointers as the Knights gained a 50-46 lead and a free throw by Donaldson created a 51-47 margin. Rhys Brossoit buried a life-giving 3-pointer for a 51-50 margin with 21.42 seconds to play and Tacchino tied the game with a putback with 12 seconds to play.

After the Knights missed a shot at the buzzer of regulation Heuvelton grabbed 56-51 lead on two scores by lsrael Paradise. A Connor Flack conversion on the break made it a one possession game at 58-55, a Johnson free throws made 59-55 and Rutherford's third 3 of the night made it 59-58.

The Bulldogs secured the win on two free throws by Brossoit and Arick Roane in the final 20 seconds.

Isreal Paradise scored seven points in the first quarter and went on to lead a balanced Heuvelton offense with 14. Johnson and Brossoit finished with 13 and 12 points. Landyn Ashlaw netted eight points and Isaac Murdock and Arick Roane added three and two.

Rutherford scored 18 of his 24 points for Lisbon in the second half and the overtime and AJ Donaldson and Connor Flack followed with 12 and 10 points. Connor Bell added five points followed by Isaiah White with four and Tanner Fonda with three.

M-W 15 — E-K 36: The Yellow Jackets used a 29-14 advantage in the second and third quarters to erase a 13-9 deficit against the Cougars in the consolation game of the John Dinneen Memorial Tournament at M-W.

"It was a good win for the guys, both teams had a lot of turnovers but we stepped up after a slow start," said M-W Coach Aaron Jones.

M-W prevailed with excellent scoring balance led by nine points from Cole Smith and Kolby Todd. Jakob Mayette and Ryan Mayette each scored eight, Aaron Putman and Tyree Hawkins each netted six and Jamison Zysik dropped in five.

Kale Green and Dawson Matthews combined for 13 and 10 points for E-K and Coopeer Allen tallied seven. Brody Bullock (4), Caleb Robinson and Aiden Koddy each added one.

HCS JVS WIN

Heuvelton opened a 12-9 lead after the first quarter and steadily marched to a 50-28 victory in the JV Championship Game of the John Dinneen Tournment in Madrid-Waddington. Park Felt scored 13 of his game-high 15 points in the second half and Colt McAllister tallied nine of his 14 poinrts in the first quarter.

Dylan Ashlaw delivered eight points and Jude Spooner added two.

Ian Quinlan tallied 13 points for Lisbon and Gavin Richardson dropped in seven. TJ O'Brien tallied four points and Logan Brooks and Will Pirie each added two.

H-D BOYS WIN

FORT COVINGTON — Emerson McQuade (10), Jeremey Carr (8) and Noah Locy (8) combined for 26 points in the second half as Hermon-DeKalb shaded Salmon River 42-38 to win its debut under first year coach Jake Fenlong. McQuade went 7-7 from the foul line in a 16-point effort and Locy also finished with 16 points. Hunter Bouchey added five points.

Edward Jacobs scored a fgame-high 18 points for Salmon River and Tyleroux and Chaiff Fayad each added four.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

LISBON — Visiting Canton (1-0) used a very balanced and very steady point production to secure a 57-45 nonleague girls basketball win at Lisbon (1-1). Callie Klassen buried five 3-pointers scoring a game-high 17 points for the Lady Bears who also received five points from Winnie Downs, 12 from Devon White and 10 from Tessa Alguire. Vivian Coburn added one point to the winning effort which was anchored in a 17-10 first quarter lead.

Allison Bell scored a game-high 24 points to lead Lisbon and scored 11 points in the second quarter. Sophia Walker and Leah Warren followed with nine and eight points and Rachel LaRock tallied four.
