Here's who won the Register Star's Athlete of the Week honor for March 18-23

After a tight battle that went down to the wire, Winnebago softball player Kyla Warkentien just edged out Hononegah's track and field star Jordan Dimke in this week's Rockford Register Star high school Athlete of the Week poll for the week of March 18-23.

However, due to a technical error, the poll was open for one extra hour this week. These are the results of the poll that closed at 1 p.m. this week. We apologize for the inconvenience and will correct it for the future. The poll will close at noon on Fridays.

Warkentien pitched four innings, striking out five and going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a double and a walk as Winnebago knocked off Boylan 17-2 last week in softball. She had three RBIs and scored three runs. Dimke placed second in the high jump at Saturday's indoor state meet in Bloomington with a clearance of 5-feet-5 3/4.

Then the two battled it out all week on our AOW poll. Dimke held a slight advantage at noon Friday, but Warkentien passed her with the extra voting time. Warkentien earned 40.81 percent of the votes (4,562 votes), while Dimke finished with 40.08 percent of the votes (4,480 votes).

The other nominees were: Harlem's Paige Stovall; Oregon's Emma Schlichtmann and Jack Washburn; South Beloit's Jasmine Fago; Belvidere North's Ava Morris; Guilford's Zariah Burnett; and Rochelle's Andrew Nuyen.
