Here's where Nicholls women's basketball was voted to finish in the SLC preseason poll

Nicholls women's basketball will not be one of the contenders for the Southland Conference championship in the 2023-24 college basketball season, at least according to the SLC's preseason poll.

In his first season leading the Colonels, new head coach Justin Payne's squad was picked to finish 10th in the conference, receiving just 39 points. Southeastern was voted to win the SLC, finishing with a league-high 159 points and 15 first-place votes.

Payne may be in his first season leading Nicholls, but he does have familiarity: he played four years for the Colonels men's program from 2005-09, starting in 89 games. After graduation, he spent eight seasons as an assistant for the Nicholls women, then spent four seasons as the head coach at Division II Georgia Southwestern before returning to the Colonels as the head coach in March.

Nicholls opens the season at home against NAIA North American University on Nov. 6.
