Here's what happened during the Oklahoma high school All-State week

Football: Late TD lifts East over West

The annual Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State football game came down to the wire.

After battling back and forth and trading leads throughout the contest, the East got the ball inside West territory in the final seconds and needed a big play to break a tie.

That’s when Collinsville quarterback Andrew Carney came through.

Carney, who is signed to play tailback at the University of Central Oklahoma, tossed a 25-yard touchdown to Hominy’s Joe Overstreet with 12 seconds remaining, sealing a 34-27 victory for the East on Friday at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Crain Family Stadium in Shawnee.

The East got the victory, but the West squad gave a valiant effort.

Washington wide receiver Luke Hendrix had a great performance on the field he’ll play on at the next level. The OBU signee caught three touchdowns for the West.

Heritage Hall receiver Gavin Freeman, an OU preferred walk-on, also made some impressive plays, most notably a highlight-reel catch in the second quarter. Surrounded by three East defenders, Freeman went up for a jump ball and came down with it for a first down.

Marlow kicker and Iowa State signee Jace Gilbert was the star of the game on special teams. He made two field goals for the West from more than 40 yards out. Gilbert hit a 43-yarder as time expired in the first half and a 49-yarder in the fourth quarter.

The East finished with four scorers in double figures as Tulsa Booker T. Washington’s Aaron Potter and Broken Arrow’s Anthony Allen both finished with 15 points of their own.

Mustang’s Ethan Scott led the Large West with 23 points. The sharpshooter sunk seven 3-pointers, five coming in the first half. He had just one field goal that wasn’t behind the arc. Midwest City’s Jacobi Sebock and Lawton MacArthur’s Arzhonte Dallas finished with 18 and 15, respectively.

Boys basketball: Small West edges out East (3A, 2A, A, B)

Tyrone’s Roberto Hernandez kept himself calm and collected as he knocked down two free throws to put the game out of reach.

Girls basketball: Small East tops Small West

The thunderstorm in Jenks on Wednesday night knocked out the power in the Frank Herald Field House about 45 minutes before tipoff. With a slight delay to change locations, the games began at Sapulpa High School and each game had a thrilling finale.

The Small East squeezed by the Small West 67-64 in the first game. Webber Falls’ Samantha Shanks drained a deep 3-pointer in the final quarter to help seal the win, although after just the first quarter it didn’t look like the two teams were heading for a close finish.

Perry’s Braylee Dale finished with 12 points, while Crowder’s Maggie Sockey stole the night as the best facilitator with flashy passes that led to scoring. Pocola’s Mika Scott turned in 10 points of her own.

But the Small West came storming back behind Stratford’s Jaedyn Getman (18), Hyrdro-Eakly’s Rees Berkey (12) and Amber-Pocasset’s Devynn Harris (11). However, Sockey drained a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

Girls basketball: Large West narrowly takes Large East

Azja Poole quickly made her way up the floor as the final seconds of the third quarter wound down.

The Carl Albert standout and Seminole State signee was confronted by an East defender, causing her to pick up her dribble behind the arc. Stuck in no man’s land, Poole jumped to her right and heaved a one-hand shot that fell through the cylinder as the buzzer sounded. Poole stood and stared at the West bench with a big smile in amazement of her circus shot.

Poole’s 3-pointer was a part of a big third-quarter surge that helped lead the Small West over the Small East 62-61.

Poole finished with 15 points, although, Mustang’s Randi Harding, a Butler Community College signee, led the team with 16 points. Tuttle’s Hadley Periman, a forward heading to Tulsa, had 14 and played a big role in the paint for the West.

Sand Springs’ Journey Armstead led the East to a 16-point lead in the first quarter. Armstead finished with a game-high 18 points. Tulsa Bishop Kelley’s Rachel Avedon followed her with 10 points. But the Large West was too much to handle in the second half.
