Here's what Atlanta Braves first-round pick Hurston Waldrep did in his professional debut

South Georgia native and Atlanta Braves first-round draft pick Hurston Waldrep made his professional debut on Aug. 5.

The right-handed pitcher, who was designated for assignment with the single-A Braves affiliate Augusta GreenJackets, threw three innings and had eight strikeouts against the Columbia Fireflies.

Waldrep was born in Cairo, Georgia and played high school baseball for Thomasville High School in Thomasville, Ga. He played college baseball for the Florida Gators after a two-year stint at Southern Miss.

The Braves selected Waldrep with the 24th overall pick of the 2023 MLB Draft. He was given a $2,997,500 contract.

“We love the pure stuff he has,” Braves assistant scouting director Ronit Shah said, according to MLB.com.
