The Miami Heat suspended guard Dion Waiters for the third time this season.

"The Miami Heat announced today that Dion Waiters has been suspended without pay for his failure to adhere to team policies, violation of team rules and continued insubordination," the Heat announced Thursday night.

The team said he will be benched until after the Dec. 23 game against the Utah Jazz and is eligible to return Dec. 27 against the Indiana Pacers.

Waiters already was set to miss Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Lakers because of illness.

He has yet to appear for the Heat this season.

The 28-year-old, who is in his eighth NBA season, was suspended in November for 10 games following a reported panic attack on the team plane caused by ingesting THC-infused edibles. The NBA prohibits the use of THC, one of the primary elements in cannabis.

He also was suspended in October for the season opener for detrimental conduct, though no specifics were disclosed.

Waiters, a Syracuse product, appeared in 44 games for the Heat in 2018-19. He averaged 12.0 points, 2.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game.

He signed a four-year, $52 million contract with Miami in July 2017.
