Hartshorne edged in heated battle in Mid-America opener

Dec. 28—ADA — It was a fight until the very end.

Hartshorne faced off against Washington Thursday in the opening round of the 46th Annual Bertha Frank Teague Mid-America Classic at East Central University's Kerr Activities Center, where the Lady Miners were edged 64-57.

Jayda Moore got Hartshorne going early, earning the first six points for the Lady Miners. They next added a press break score to Alanna Williams to lead 8-1 and force a Washington timeout.

On the other side, Brooky Surginer sank free throws and back-to-back triples — including a swishing three at the buzzer from the score table to give Hartshorne the 21-17 lead after the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the teams battled back-and-forth, trading blows and the lead. The Lady Warriors then found a spark behind a pair of threes from Andrey Thomas to cap off a 10-4 run and take a 33-27 lead heading into the locker room break.

Surginer drove the lane and earned three points to get the Lady Miners moving in the second half, with Sophia Camp later adding a bucket as Hartshorne chipped away at the deficit. Surginer and Lexis Vicars hit back-to-back buckets, trimming the Washington lead down to one point.

The two teams battled neck and neck in the period's final minutes, but a no-look pass from Surginer to Vicars on the baseline put Hartshorne up 46-45 after three quarters.

Hartshorne powered its way forward to start the fourth, with points from Vicars and Surginer looking to create space from their opponents. But the Lady Warriors battled back in the latter part of the period, using an 8-0 run to get back in front and hold on for the win.

Surginer led the way for Hartshorne with 24 points, followed by Moore and Vicars with 10 points each, Camp with eight points, and Williams with five points.

Next up for Hartshorne, the Lady Miners will face Kingfisher in the consolation semifinals Friday at 3 p.m.
