Hanford rolls past Redwood behind QB Daniel Gomez's near-perfect performance

The Hanford Bullpups put on an offensive clinic on Friday night at Mineral King Bowl.

Hanford scored seven touchdowns en route to a 47-28 win over Redwood to spoil the Rangers’ homecoming festivities.

Bullpups junior quarterback Daniel Gomez completed 90% of his passes, hitting 29-of-32 attempts, for 380 yards and three touchdowns. He was perfect in the first half, completing all 18 of his throws.

Behind Gomez’s near-perfect night, Hanford’s uptempo, no-huddle attack racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense.

"He's the real deal," Hanford head coach Cannon Sanchez said of Gomez. "I've coached a lot of quality quarterbacks, but I'm talking arm talent, the whole deal, Daniel Gomez is that guy."

Turning point: On third and 18 from the Hanford 27-yard line, it was Gomez that sparked the Bullpups to another level in the second quarter.

On that play, Gomez stood strong in the pocket and tossed a 26-yard completion to senior receiver Jordan Black for a fresh set of downs. He took a big hit after the throw, which forced him to miss the next play.

Gomez returned to the field on second down and fired a 49-yard touchdown to Black. That gave the Bullpups a 21-7 lead with three minutes and 49 seconds to play in the second and they never looked back.

On the ensuing possession, senior safety Albert Richardson returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown. Junior running back Kourdey Glass then scored on a one-yard run with 27 seconds left before halftime as the Bullpups entered the break with a commanding 34-7 edge.

Hanford (4-1) put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. On third down, with a 40-28 advantage and Redwood not going away easily, Glass hauled in an 82-yard bomb with one hand and the Bullpups extended their lead to 19 points.

Glass also scored three rushing touchdowns, finding the end zone on three-, one- and 13-yard runs. He rushed for 26 yards and finished with three receptions for 86 yards.

Black led the Bullpups with 100 yards receiving on six catches.

"We're talented," Sanchez said. "We got some skilled players that can make some big plays. We're a young team so it's cool to, you know, we got some of those guys coming back next year. The chemistry part is building every single week, so I think that's a good feeling as a coach, knowing that you can call their numbers and they're going to make the play."

No quit: Redwood was down by as many as 27 points but the Rangers kept battling.

Redwood scored three second-half touchdowns.

Ronald Walsh hit paydirt on a 34-yard strike from sophomore quarterback Luke Sanchez to get the offense rolling for Redwood in the third quarter.

The Rangers pulled within 12 points, 40-28, early in the fourth quarter when Alex Perch and A.J. Garza each crossed the goal line on rushing touchdowns.

Perch led the Rangers with 67 yards rushing. Sanchez threw for 127 yards and also had a 14-yard touchdown pass to Evan Galley in this second quarter.

Five Rangers starters (three linemen, safety, linebacker) were out against Hanford with injuries.

"The first half, we just couldn't get the ball moving on offense," Redwood head coach Kevin Scharton said. "Credit Hanford. Hanford came out tonight ready to play. They're playing well on all phases of the game — special teams, offense and defense. Offensively, I think we picked it up in the second half. Defense, however, we still struggled, so we got to go back to work. We got a bye week. We got to get some guys healthy. We're gonna go back to basic fundamentals."

Redwood played one of the toughest non-league schedules in Tulare County this season. The Rangers have losses to Centennial (3-2), undefeated Clovis North (5-0) and Hanford (4-1) and posted wins over Tulare Union (3-1) and Tulare Western (2-2). They even scrimmaged Clovis West (4-1).

Redwood's five non-league foes are a combined 17-6.

The Rangers will kick off East Yosemite League play on Sept. 29 when they play El Diamante at Visalia Community Stadium.

Redwood is the defending EYL champion.

"We're probably one of the best battled-tested teams in the Valley," Scharton said. "We've gone through Clovis West, Clovis North, Centennial, Tulare Union, and Hanford, Tulare Western. Some really good teams out there. I'm sure their combined records tell it all but I think we're ready for league. We got some guys getting healthy."
