Hamilton High steps up to help Arizona State by hosting wrestling match vs. Iowa State on Friday

With Arizona State needing some help to host Iowa State in a wrestling match Friday, Chandler Hamilton High School has stepped up.

The Chandler Unified School District and Valley wrestling community can shine a light on a big college attraction so that the Sun Devils don't have to leave the state to take on the Cyclones, a traditional wrestling power.

The match is Friday at 6 p.m. at Hamilton's gym.

"ASU wrestling had some conflicts at the arenas in Tempe and we were approached by ASU Athletics," Hamilton Athletic Director Brett Palmer said. "We did a walk-through of the facility and coach Zeke Jones wanted to host it local here in the Valley rather than moving it out of state.

"It’s a great event for the Chandler/CUSD community as well as the wrestling community. We are excited to host both of these first-class programs and looking forward to it. Both schools have Arizona wrestlers on their rosters and should be a great event. We are excited."

Palmer said that the event is nearly sold out with "a couple of hundred tickets left." They can be ordered here at this ticket link: https://gofan.co/app/school/AZ100186

Last year, the two programs were top-five in the nation when they met with No. 4 Iowa State pulling out a 19-15 win over then No. 3 ASU.

Iowa State (6-1) is ranked No. 5 nationally this year and ASU (1-2) is No. 21.

Former Sunnyside High star Anthony Echemendia, at 141 pounds, is one of the Cyclones' top wrestlers, with a 10-3 record.
