Hall crosses the border for match against Longmeadow

The Hall High School field hockey team traveled across the border for an interstate match against Longmeadow (which won the Division II state championship in 2022), on Oct. 9.

The trip to Massachusetts didn’t pay off in the final score, Lancers 6 – Titans 1, but there were definitely valuable lessons learned, according to coach Jenna Behan.

“That’s how we look at it, because they’re a very strong team,” Behan said. “It’s nice to play someone outside of the normal circuit.”

Longmeadow set the tone early, scoring two goals in the first three minutes. By halftime, it was 6-0. Hall’s halftime adjustments, however, worked, as it held the Lancers scoreless in the second half.

“I just told my team exactly what we learned, which is we can’t wait until the second half to start playing. We had a slow, quiet warm-up. The first half, we didn’t play our game, but in the second half, we played our game.”

With just four minutes left in the game, Hall’s Josie Carey scored.

“It was her first varsity goal, so that’s always exciting,” Behan said.

The Titans have a mix of experience, with senior captains Ellie Goldstein, Kathleen Culmo, Grace Ganey, and Clare Sweeney leading the way.

“We’re pretty experienced, and pretty offense-heavy, but our defense has really come into their own this season,” Behan said, adding that they can always use more points, especially as the season progresses, and in the postseason.

“Finishing,” she said. “Who doesn’t need to finish better, on cage?”

Hall fell to 7-3 for the season. Longmeadow improved to 6-3-5.
