H.S. football roundup: Niles wins first ever district title

Niles High School made history Friday night when it won its first football district title with a 42-13 walloping of Paw Paw in its Division 4 championship game at Viking Stadium.

Niles (10-1) moves on to a Division 4 Regional final where it will host unbeaten Portland Friday at 7 p.m. The Raiders beat Hastings, 38-24, in their district final Friday.

Paul Hess led the Vikings with 24 carries for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Julian Means-Flewellen had eight carries and 71 yards with a touchdown. Sam Rucker's 79 rushing yards included a 70-yard TD run in the final quarter.

Paw Paw finishes its season 9-2, with both losses going to Niles.

INDIANA AREA PLAYOFFS

CLASS 5A-SECTIONAL 10

Valparaiso 26, Michigan City 7

Quarterback Justin Clark had scored two rushing touchdowns threw for one and Tyler VerSchure had two interceptions as defending Class 5A state champ Valparaiso eliminated Michigan City. The Vikings move into regional play with a 9-2 record.

Kyron Hart scored the lone touchdown for Michigan City, which finishes the season at 6-5.

CLASS 4A-SECTIONAL 17

New Prairie 43, Culver Academy 14

Senior quarterback Marshall Kmiecek carried the ball 14 times for 236 yards rushing, including a touchdown and a two-point converstion as New Prairie claimed the Class 4A Sectional 17 title.

The Cougars amassed 453 rushing yards. Sophomore Reed Robinson had 127 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Junior Zak Henrich also had two rushing touchdowns and Brock Sinka had one.

Defensively, junior safety Hayden Scott had 11 tackles. Junior Brock Barcevic had eight tackles and Harris Groves had seven. Reece Lapczynski and Keegan Taylor each intercepted a pass.

The 10-2 Cougars will travel to Nappanee, Ind., to take on NorthWood, also 10-2, for a regional crown Friday at 7:30 p.m.

CLASS 3A-SECTIONAL 26

Knox 60, John Glenn 37

Myles Mclaughlin rushed for a whopping five touchdowns and threw for another as Knox crushed Glenn for the Class 3A Sectional 26 title.

Knox takes an 11-0 record into regional this Friday.

Chase Miller rushed for two touchdowns, including an interception return, and passed for another TD for Glenn, which finishes 7-5. Mason Kobelt scored two TDs for the Falcons and Blake Wright added another.

CLASS 1A-SECTIONAL 41

North Judson 33, Triton 7

Brock Benson scored four touchdowns while rushing for 201 yards on 32 carries as North Judson won the Class 1A Sectional 41 title over Triton.

Quarterback Cole Shively was 7-of-16 passing for 143 yards and scored a rushing touchdown to lead Triton, which finishes its season 8-4.
