H.S. baseball: Dublin's Teten leads North past South in Big Country FCA all-star game

SAN ANGELO — Chris Teten was caught off guard when he was named the Big Country FCA all-star baseball game MVP, after helping the North beat the South 15-5 on Friday at Angelo State’s Foster Field.

“It’s crazy. I wasn’t expecting that, honestly,” said Teten, a recent Dublin graduate. “I didn’t think I played very well.”

Teten went 2-for-2 and walked twice. He scored twice and hit a three-run double in a six-run sixth. Teten, who will play baseball at McMurry University in the fall, also threw a scoreless inning in the eighth — allowing two hits.

Considering the wealth of talent on the field, it was a humbling experience for Teten.

“Some of them I don’t know, and some of them I’ve played with since I was little — like the kids from Stephenville,” Teten said. “I played with them when I was younger, and I played football against Cole Chapman.”

Teten, who might be better known as Dublin’s starting quarterback the past few years, enjoyed playing alongside some of the Big Country’s best baseball players.

“It was interesting, at first,” Teten said. “It was quiet that first day of practice then we all got to know each other and bonded very well.”

Rivals become teammates

Speaking of interesting, how about rivals such as Anson’s Nick Miller playing alongside District 8-2A rivals Cole Chapman and Cade Price of Albany?

In fact, they helped Miller earn the victory as the North’s starter. He allowed two runs on three hits in three innings. Miller struck out five and walked one. He also walked and scored in the third and fifth.

“It’s really cool to play with each other,” Price said about Miller. “We’ve known each other since we were kids. This whole week with him was really fun.”

Though rivals during the high school season, Price and Miller have played on the same travel team.

Chapman walked and scored in the third and fifth innings and added an RBI single in the sixth and scored.

Price drew a bases-loaded walk in the third, hit a three-run double in the fifth and had an infield hit in the sixth.

Their contributions in a five-run third helped the North overcome a 2-1 deficit that made Miller the winning pitcher.

The South drew within one on a two-run double by Early’s Caleb McCullough in the fourth and an RBI sacrifice fly by Winters’ Nico Rodriguez in the fifth.

The North's Jeremyah Abila of Haskell, left, stretches to tag out the South's Case Markham of Brownwood who was trying to take second after reaching first on a throwing error in the eighth inning.

However, Price’s three-run double in the fifth capped a four-run inning to break the game open.

Price also threw two scoreless innings, retiring all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings.

It was a bittersweet day, since it was the last time Price and Chapman got to play together as teammates.

“It’s a little sad, but sometimes you’ve got to move on,” said Price, who will study architecture at Texas State. “I’m happy I get to play with him one last time.”

Price and Teten combined to throw three scoreless innings to end the game.

Hits and misses …

Abilene High’s Diego Flores had two hits and scored as a pinch-runner. Twice he took third on an errant pickoff throw while at first base.

Walks doomed the South. The Red squad issued 17 and 14 came around to score. The North’s five-run third all came without recording a hit while drawing seven walks.

The game, originally scheduled for nine innings, was stopped after the South batted in the top of the eighth because of lightning in the area.
