GVSU women take down Parkside Rangers

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated Parkside on Saturday in a 71-57 victory on the road. The Lakers advance to 3-1 in the GLIAC and 8-1 overall.

The Lakers and Rangers played an even first quarter, with both teams unable to pull away from the other. After both teams shot 50% in the first quarter, it was tied at 18-18 heading into the second. Trading baskets throughout the second, GVSU ended the quarter with free throws from senior Samantha Gehrls and went into halftime with just a two-point advantage over the Rangers.

GVSU was able to extend the lead to six with 6:54 left in the third quarter. After baskets from senior Hannah Kulas and sophomore Rylie Bisballe, the Lakers closed out the quarter with a nine-point advantage heading into the fourth. The Lakers were looking to slow down Parkside in the second half after scoring eight threes in the first half. The Lakers' defensive efforts were able to hold them to just three in the second half. While the Lakers were able to extend the lead to 17 in the fourth quarter, GVSU finished the game with a 14 point victory over the Rangers.

Despite shooting just 3-16 from behind the arc, the Lakers shot 45% on the day and scored 48 of their 71 points in the paint. Rylie Bisballe finished with her first double-double this season, scoring 14 points, grabbing 10 boards, and blocking four shots for the Lakers. Senior Emily Spitzley also finished with 14 points, followed by sophomore Ellie Droste and Hannah Kulas who finished with 13 points and 11 points respectively.

The Lakers are back in action at home on Friday, Dec. 17 against Aquinas. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m
