Gulf Breeze beach volleyball wins first two matchups at state tourney | AREA ROUNDUP

Just one area baseball team remains alive in the 2024 season after some wild results throughout the night.

Elsewhere, Gulf Breeze beach volleyball is still on the hunt for a state championship.

Here's a roundup of area contests that happened on Saturday, May 11.

Baseball

Jay 3, Paxton 1: The Royals are region champs.

In a low-scoring win, Jay topped Paxton in the Region 1-1A final in Jay.

The Royals plated all three of their runs unanswered, scoring twice in the first inning and another in the second. Paxton got one run back in the top of the fourth, but the Royals silenced the Bobcats otherwise.

Stats for Jay were not yet reported.

Jay (17-10) advances to the state semifinals on Wednesday as the third seed, and will play Lafayette at 1 p.m. in Fort Myers. The other semifinal game is between No. 1 Bozeman and No. 4 Trenton.

Lincoln 7, Escambia 1: The Gators' season came to a close in the region semifinals at Lincoln.

Inning-by-inning scores were not reported. Individual stats were not available.

Escambia closes out the season with a 21-8 overall record and a District 1-5A championship.

Bishop Snyder 6, Pensacola Catholic 5: Stunned.

The Crusaders, ranked No. 1 in the state, fell in the Region 1-3A semifinals to Bishop Snyder in upset fashion in extra innings.

Bishop Snyder posted two runs in the top of the third before Pensacola Catholic rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings. Both teams added three runs in the eighth to keep the game moving.

Pensacola Catholic had a chance to end the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but the runners were stranded after a strikeout from Ben Bates. Bishop Snyder scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th of an RBI single.

The Crusaders had another chance to tie the game with runners on first and second, but a fly out from Colton Guillot to right field ended the game, and the Crusaders' incredible season comes to a close.

Individual stats for the Crusaders were not yet reported.

Pensacola Catholic's season ends with a 27-2 overall record, claiming a District 1-3A championship in the process.

Beach volleyball

Gulf Breeze 3, St. John Lutheran 0: Things got postponed after storms blew through Tallahassee, but the Dolphins started their state tournament off with a win.

Gulf Breeze won all three pairings by scores of 2-0.

Gulf Breeze 3, Hagerty 0: The Dolphins continued the day with a win in the state quarterfinals.

Again, Gulf Breeze won all three pairings by scores of 3-0.

Individual stats were not available.

Gulf Breeze (20-0) plays St. Thomas Aquinas, the fourth seed of the state tournament, in the state semifinals on Sunday at 11 a.m. A trip to the championship match is on the line, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
