Griffons improve to 5-1 with win on Saturday

Oct. 8—Missouri Western football continues to stack wins, this time posting a 61-21 blowout of the Washburn Ichabods on Saturday to earn their fifth straight win.

Off the heels of an emotional victory over ranked Emporia State a week ago, the Griffons didn't experience any hangover in Topeka, Kansas.

Western's run game, which was number one in the MIAA heading into Saturday, continued to be the team's biggest strength. Redshirt freshman Seth Cromwell started game one of the season as a short yardage, goal line back. But Cromwell has blossomed during the five-game win streak and has carved out a bigger role for himself with upperclassmen Jared Scott and Brandon Hall in the mix. Cromwell found the end zone on Saturday and led the Griffs with 156 of the 407 yards on the ground.

Western also added to their MIAA-leading sack total with three sacks. The 336 yards of offense allowed to Washburn is the second lowest total allowed to an opponent this season.

The success of the rushing attack made life easy for starting quarterback Armani Edden. Edden saw a turnover-free afternoon and completed 13 of 16 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Its fifth straight victory, as Western was knocking on the door of the AFCA top 25 just a week ago, could potentially see the Griffons crack the rankings come Monday morning.
