Green Bay Packers' Family Night 2023 weather forecast calls for slight chance of showers after the practice

GREEN BAY ‒ Green Bay Packers fans probably won't have to worry about getting wet on Saturday for Family Night. Probably.

"As of right now, Saturday is looking dry for the Green Bay area," said Rebecca Kruck, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Green Bay. "The potential for storms is going to hold off until after the event."

Kruck said it's too early to tell if two systems headed for the area this weekend will merge or stay separate. For purposes of Family Night, separate would be better.

"As of right now, (the forecast) could possibly change. There has been an indication for the potential of showers and thunderstorms sometime over the weekend. It has trended to late Saturday night into Sunday," Kruck said.

The forecast calls for a high of 80 on Saturday and will probably be in the 70s for most of the practice.

Rain on Family Night is not unheard of, although the event, in its 22nd year, was rarely canceled. That takes lightning or maybe sideways rain. Sometimes, that happened.

In 2021, lightning caused a half-hour delay. Fans were allowed back into the bowl, where it rained throughout. Fireworks were canceled.

In 2008, the scrimmage was delayed nearly two hours by lightning. In 2009, the scrimmage was canceled because of lightning, although the fireworks show was held.

In 2011, they got in 20 minutes of practice before then-coach Mike McCarthy called it quits just before a deluge. In that case, the players did not come back on the field to practice after the storm passed, but the Packers did hold the fireworks show, which brings this up: In case of inclement weather, no refunds will be issued unless all stadium activities — from 5:30 p.m. until the end of the fireworks show — are canceled.
