Grant McCasland adds 6 to Texas Tech basketball staff

Head coach Grant McCasland announced six new additions to the Texas Tech men's basketball staff on Saturday.

Among the new hires is Luke Barnwell, who will be the third assistant coach for the Red Raiders. Matt Braeuer and Achoki Moikobu were previously announced as assistant coaches, joining McCasland from the North Texas staff.

Barnwell comes to Tech after spending the last 10 years at Sunrise Christian Academy, a member of the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference in Wichita, Kansas. He compiled a 224-39 record in his time at the high school and was named the Naismith High School Boys Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2022.

At Sunrise Christian, Barnwell coached more than 75 Division I basketball players and worked with six players that have gone on to the NBA. He coached Gradey Dick and Ochai Agbaji and helped train Buddy Hield and Ron Baker.

Sunrise Christian advanced to the final four of the GEICO High School National Tournament in 2023 and was ranked No. 1 throughout the 2022 season, winning in the inaugural NIBC.

"Coach Barnwell has great head coaching experience," McCasland said in the news release, "and has recruited and coached some of the best players around the world. He's got great basketball feel but his ability to relate to players is what separates him."

Other additions to the coaching staff include Clay Wilson (director of player development), Jardon Powell (director of administration & operations), Cooper Anderson (assistant coordinator of operations), Chris Nottingham (video coordinator) and Christian Hosley (assistant strength & conditioning coach).

Anderson is being retained as Tech's coordinator of basketball operations, a role he served in last year. This will be his seventh year with the Red Raiders, previously working as a graduate assistant in operations and equipment. He was a student manager for the team during the 2018 run to the Elite Eight and for the 2019 national runner-up squad.

Nottingham joined the program as the video coordinator in May. Also a Baylor graduate, he worked in multiple roles during the Bears' run to the 2021 national championship.
