Grand Forks places seven on North Dakota all-state boys hockey team

Mar. 4—GRAND FORKS — The two Grand Forks high schools combined to land seven players on the North Dakota all-state hockey team.

State champion Grand Forks Red River placed three on the team, while state runner-up Grand Forks Central had four players selected.

All seven Grand Forks picks were first-time all-state choices.

For Central, goalie Jaxon Washburn, defenders Cale Quamme and Finn Lockwood and forward Evan Panzer received all-state honors.

For Red River, defenseman Mason Ray and forwards Grant Gardner and Rylan Bydal made the all-state team.

Of Grand Forks' seven selections, five were seniors with Lockwood and Bydal the lone juniors.

Washburn finished the season with a save percentage of 94.9 and a goals-against average of 1.29.

Ray was Red River's top scoring defenseman and the fifth-leading scorer. He ended with eight goals and 16 assists.

Quamme had two goals and 14 assists, while Lockwood finished with two goals and eight assists.

Panzer led the Knights in scoring with 16 goals and 31 assists. Panzer's 47 points tied for No. 10 in the state in scoring.

Gardner and Bydal were both in the state's top seven in scoring. Gardner was the East Region's leading scorer.

Gardner scored 25 goals and 30 assists, while Bydal had 22 goals and 28 assists.

Panzer, Gardner, Ray and Washburn were each named to the state's all-tournament team.

Gardner was honored as the state's Senior Athlete of the Year, also known as Mr. Hockey.
