Norwell XC sweeps SSL Meet: South Shore high school top performers (Oct. 23-28)

We're heading into the home stretch of the fall high school season as teams jockey for playoff position or fight for playoff berths.

The MIAA tournament brackets will be announced next week.

Friday

GIRLS SOCCER

Hingham's Claire Murray scored twice in a 2-2 tie with North Quincy. Hannah Lasch and Carolyn Downey assisted for the Harborwomen (9-6-3). Paige Grippi and Maddie O’Donnell scored for NQ.

Emilee Dunham scored the goal and freshman Kaitlyn Asplund starred in goal as Rockland defeated Abington, 1-0. The victory clinched a spot in the Div. 4 state tournament for Rockland.

Cardinal Spellman's Emma Pero had a pair of goals and an assist, and Clare Varano and Caroline Bligh also scored in a 4-1 win over Brockton. The Cardinals are 14-1-1.

BOYS SOCCER

In a 2-0 win over Bourne, Antonio Guarino and Angel Luyo scored the goals for Archbishop Williams (11-3-4). Robbie Cibotti tallied his 12th shutout of the season.

George Baroud and Noah Schneeweis scored goals in West Bridgewater's 2-0 win over Seekonk. Freshman Ben Stapleton posted his fourth shutout of the season. Dylan Spadea also had an assist.

Hingham's Alessandro Neyra scored twice, and Mason Lemieux added a goal in a 3-0 win over North Quincy. For Hingham (16-1) it was the final Patriot League game in the career of coach Ken Carlin, who is retiring after the season.

VOLLEYBALL

In Whitman-Hanson's 3-0 win over Abington, Andrea Mulligan (7 kills, 4 blocks), Bailey Kelly (4 kills, 2 blcoks) and Caroline Gray (7 kills) led the way.

Canton finished off a 20-0 regular season with a 3-0 win over Quincy. Jess Wright led the way with 14 kills.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Norwell took first in the South Shore League Championship meet. East Bridgewater placed second. Norwell's Thomas Corbett won the meet in 16:08 while EB's Ezra Blasko was second. Carver's Luke Holden placed third.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Norwell took first in the South Shore League Championship meet. Abington took second while Middleboro was third. Abington's Selena Wood and Evangeline McCleary took first and third, respectively, while Norwell's Adelle Gravina was second.

FIELD HOCKEY

In Hingham's 2-1 win over Falmouth, Sam Ruddick had a goal and an assist. Haylen Wilson scored the other goal for the Harborwomen (15-2-1). Sammy Price, Lily Samoska, Kaitlyn Manning, and goalie Becca Kardoos played well defensively.

Thursday

VOLLEYBALL

Oliver Ames' Sarah Hilliard recorded 19 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, in a 3-0 loss to Bishop Feehan (14-25, 13-25, 16-25). Junior Clare Kavolius had 20 assists, senior Rachel Fleischman had 20 receptions and 12 digs, and junior Addyson Smock had four kills and two solo blocks.

The East Bridgewater core of Ayla Kingman, Amya Oliveira, Olivia McManus and Adriana Amicangioli played well as the Vikings swept Middleboro to improve to 12-6.

Quincy lost 3-1 at Silver Lake. The Presidents (9-11) had 40 kills on 38 assists and 65 digs as a team.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lucinda Li Cotter netted the game's lone goal off a step-up from Rhiya Fisher as Oliver Ames defeated Foxboro, 1-0, to clinch the Hockomock League Davenport Division title. Goalkeeper Janiya Matier-Morales made 6 saves in the win. OA improves to 13-3-0.

West Bridgewater's Rachael Geniuch scored two and Cassidy Perrault scored one as the Wildcats salvaged a 3-3 tie with East Bridgewater. West Bridgewater holds steady at 11-5-1.

Cohasset's Tess Barrett found the back of the net as the Skippers tied Silver Lake, 1-1.

Hanover's Sophia Foley scored three goals to lead the Hawks to a 7-0 win over Quincy. Anna Canniff, Camryn Carthas, Anna Egan and Ayla McDermod also scored for Hanover (17-0-1). Senior goalkeeper Natalie Mutschler tallied her 12th shutout of the season.

The defense of Whitman-Hanson's Brooke Bell, Brooke McAloney, Lexi Cole and Savannah Kamperides were strong in front of keeper Ayla Dernier as the Panthers tied Plymouth North, 0-0. Maddie Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Kowlsi, Makenna Marshall and Aliya Chapman also played well for W-H. Goalkeeper Amelia Finley had the shutout for North (4-6-6).

Braintree's Chloe McGinty had the lone goal, and goalkeeper Jackie McGonigle made 8 saves for the shutout in a 1-0 road win over Milton. The Wamps are 4-11-3.

Avon's Gianna Rosa scored, and Maryssa Curto, Hanelie Cadet, Idelyne Semedo and Alanna Oliveira were defensive standouts in a 1-1 tie with South Shore Tech that clinched a playoff berth for the Panthers (6-6-2).

BOYS SOCCER

Pat Moore scored two goals and Jack Corby and Miguel Olivera each scored one as Plymouth North cruised to a 4-0 win over Whitman-Hanson. Jack Corby (2) and Moore also finished with assists. Drew Healy and Liam Hewins also played well for the Eagles.

Pembroke's Matt McAuliffe (2), Alex Herman, Gabe Lamar, Quinn Reilly and Wil McManus all scored in a 6-1 win over Plymouth South. McManus (2), Reilly, Shane Crowley, and Matt and Tommy McAuliffe finished with assists. Joe D’Angelo, and Owen and Miles Bartolotti played well defensively as Pembroke improves to 13-1-1.

Abington goal-scorers Richard Galvao, Nathan Calcano and Max Lindo powered the Green Wave past West Bridgewater, 3-0.

Hanover's Ryan Butzbach, Ben Elliott, Kacper Borkiewicz and Colin Macpherson scored in a 4-0 win over Quincy. Goalkeeper James Solari had the shutout for the Hawks (8-5-4).

Hingham got goals from six different players -- Chris Connelly, Adam Healey, Alessandro Neyra, Nick Oravitz, Mason Lemieux and Ryan Murtagh -- in a 6-1 win over Silver Lake. The Harbormen are 15-1.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Archbishop Williams was runner-up in the Catholic Central League championship at Franklin Park in Boston. The Bishops scored 54 points, trailing only Bishop Feehan (29). Cardinal Spellman (187) finished seventh. Williams' Nolan Stone (18:23 over 3.1 miles), Joe Mento (18:28) and Eamonn Fennell (18:36) finished 6-7-8.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Archbishop Williams was third in the Catholic Central League championship at Franklin Park in Boston. The Bishops scored 61 points, trailing only Bishop Feehan (32) and Bishop Fenwick (52). Cardinal Spellman (183) was seventh. Maddie Hussey was third overall for Williams, covering the 3.1-mile course in 20:57. Lily Donovan (22:37) was 10th, and Hannah Griffin (23:06) was 12th.

Wednesday

GIRLS SOCCER

Junior goalkeeper Charlene Vu stood out in Fontbonne Academy's 1-1 draw against Arlington Catholic.

Hull advanced to a 12-2-2 record after a 7-0 win over Carver. Pirates scorers were junior Elly Thomas (three goals, one assist),  Veronica Fleming (one goal, three assists), Fallon Ryan (two goals one assist) and freshman Libby Harper. The Pirates are unbeaten in 12 straight (10-0-2).

Cohasset's Tess Barrett put up five goals in a 6-2 win over Abington. Ava Carcio also scored a goal for the Skippers. Abington's Hope Montgomery and Zoie Maslanka each scored for the Green Wave.

Southeastern's Agapi Kouvlis was the lone scorer in a 3-1 loss to Westport. The Hawks fell to 7-4-4 on the season.

East Bridgewater moved to 8-8-2 on the season after losing to Sandwich 3-2.

Cardinal Spellman's Grace Foster (two goals), Emma Pero (one goal, one assist), and Isa McDonough (one goal) each scored in a 4-0 win over Brockton.

Tabor Academy defeated Milton Academy 3-2 in an ISL matchup.

BOYS SOCCER

Cardinal Spellman defeated Cathedral/Christo Rey Boston in a 9-1 victory to move the Cardinals to 5-11-1 on the season.

Cohasset's Nathan Askjær finished with two goals in a 3-0 win over Abington. Michael Giglio also got a goal for the Skippers to advance them to 13-2-1 on the season.

Milton Academy got a 7-1 victory over Tabor Academy in an ISL matchup.

Sandwich defeated East Bridgewater with a 2-0 final score. The Vikings are now 10-5-4 and will play Bridgewater-Raynham for their final regular-season game on Friday.

Archbishop Williams' captain Antonio Guraino got two big goals in a 2-1 win over St. Mary's (Lynn). That's his eighth goal in the last four games as the Bishops advance to 10-3-4 on the season.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Oliver Ames' senior Rachel Fleischman got her 500th career dig with 22 digs and 19 receptions in a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-14, 25-21) over Foxboro. Senior Sarah Hilliard had a season-high 30 kills, and senior Paula Romero finished with 28 assists for the Tigers.

Plymouth South defeated Whitman-Hanson in a 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 25-16) in a league match. Junior Hazel Crew led W-H with 11 kills, while senior captain Bailey Kelly and junior captain Caroline Gray each had 8 kills.

North Quincy were crowned Patriot League champs after a 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-15) win over Marshfield to be 16-0 within the league.

Notre Dame Academy's Liv Flaherty had 16 kills in a 3-0 win over Falmouth. Delaney Cameron had three kills, Jainine Pierre with four kills, and Katherine Nunnery had two kills for the Cougars.

Canton's Fatima Sidibay finished with seven blocks and five kills in their 3-0 win over Mansfield. Erin Bigham had 34 assists, eight digs, and three kills. Senior captain Jess Wright had 16 kills, 10 digs, and three aces.

Milton Academy got a 3-1 victory over Tabor Academy in an ISL matchup.

South Shore Tech's Mia Bradshaw served 15 aces in a 3-0 (25-6, 25-14, 25-22) win over Blue Hills. Hannah Nota had six kills and served six aces to help SST advance to 15-4 on the season.

Thayer Academy's Shayna Hailey had 12 kills and a pair of solo blocks in a 3-0 loss to Winsor School. Kaitlyn Butkuss and Catherine Woods each had 12 digs. Also playing well for the Tigers: Abigail Greenough (5 kills), Annelise Reinhard (14 digs, 2 aces, 12 assists) and Rowan Mottau (9 assists, 10 digs, 2 aces),

GOLF

Sandwich won the South Shore League tournament crown, shooting 240 as a team. Zaren Graff led the charge with a 77. Blaise Chatigney shot 79, and Dylan McCabe had an 84.

FIELD HOCKEY

Hingham's Haylen Wilson got her 50th career goal (two goals, two assists) in a 4-0 win over Hanover in a Patriot League showdown. Harborwomen coach Susan Petrie got her 200th win as well. Ella O'Neill and Stella Brazis also scored for Hingham (14-2-1).

Braintree's Kathryn Freeman and Gabby Diaute scored in a 2-1 win over Milton. Braintree is 9-7-2.

Milton Academy got a 4-0 victory over Tabor Academy in an ISL matchup.

Tuesday

BOYS GOLF

Milton's Johnny Gillooly shot even-par 72 to earn medalist honors at the Division 2 North Sectional qualifier at Stow Acres Country Club. Devin Prince (82), Ethan Nowak (83) and Jack Naughton (84) also scored for the Wildcats, who placed fifth in the team competition with a score of 321. Canton tied for 10th (340), led by Teddy Shuman (83), Travis Thomas (85) and Huck McCready (85). Marblehead (311), Gloucester (312) and Reading (313) finished 1-2-3.

At the Div. 2 South Sectional qualifier at Easton Country Club, Duxbury's Owen Hamilton tied for first with a 1-over 71 to help the Dragons (313) place second in team scoring and qualify for next week's state tournament at Thorny Lea Golf Club. Duxbury's Mike Yucius and Matt Nejame finished in a seven-way tie for seventh at 8-over 79, and Anthony Rabeni was 21st at 12-over 83.

Scituate's Tom McMellen and Luke Ryan each shot 8-over 79 to tie for seventh place and qualify for the individual competition at next week's Div. 2 state tournament. Scituate (330) missed qualifying for the team competition by 5 strokes.

Hanover was fourth (327), led by Chris Doherty (part of the seventh-place logjam at 79), Matt Reynolds (T-14th, 81), Joe Dacosta (T-18th, 82) and Owen Barth (T-25th, 85).

At the Div. 3 Central Sectional qualifier at Kettle Brook Golf Club in Paxton, East Bridgewater's Cole Redder finished fourth at 6-over 78 to help the Vikings (333 team score) finish third in team competition and earn a spot at next week's Div. 3 state final. Redder qualified for the individual competition as well. Ryan Barrett (T-17th, 84), Mike Hauter (T-19th, 85) and Sean Gurney (T-25th, 86) also scored for EB. It's the first time in program history for both a team and individual to reach a state final.

At the Div. 2 Central Sectional qualifier at Maplegate Country Club in Bellingham, Archbishop Williams' Brady Sullivan finished 10th at 5-over 77. Teammate Aaron McCarthy tied for 11th at 6-over 78, and Blue Hills' Alex Dennehy tied for 20th at 9-over 81.

GIRLS SOCCER

Blue Hills freshman Jenna Lehane scored twice, and sophomore goalkeeper Ally Johnson broke the school's single-season shutout record by recording her 11th clean sheet of the season in a 3-0 win over Old Colony. Alexis D’Arcy had the other goal for the Warriors (15-0-2, 7-0-1 Mayflower Athletic Conference).

West Bridgewater's Rachael Geniuch scored her 100th career goal in a 4-3 loss to Apponequet. Kylie Fuller and Sophia Hulme also found the net for the Wildcats (11-5).

Oliver Ames' Lucinda Li Cotter, Taylor deVos, Bridget McDonough and Siena Fabrizio scored in a 4-0 win over Sharon. Emma Gavin and Lindsay Nosalek added assists for the Tigers (12-3-0).

Hanover's Sophie Schiller scored in a 1-1 tie with Scituate. The Hawks are 16-0-1.

Hingham's Claire Murray scored four times for the Harborwomen (9-6-2) in a 4-1 win over Duxbury (11-4-1), which got a goal from Lauren Sutliffe.

Pembroke's Sadie Nugent had a hat trick in a 6-1 Senior Night win over Quincy. Allyson Johnson and Margaret MacDonald also scored for the Titans, and goalkeeper Ava Dunphy found the net as an outfield player. Dunphy split time in goal with Elizabeth Goff.

Whitman-Hanson's Maddie Fitzgerald and Makenna Marshall scored in a 2-1 win over Silver Lake. Brooke McAloney, Lexi Cole, Brooke Bell and Savannah Kamperides had strong defensive games in front of goalkeeper Ayla Dernier for the Panthers (7-8-1).

Avon's Savannah Beers Goncalves scored in a 2-1 loss to Rising Tide Charter. Goalkeeper Mica Gomes made 8 saves.

Marshfield's Ryann Doyle scored in a 1-1 tie with Plymouth North. The Rams are 9-4-4.

Braintree junior Erin Kelley scored her first varsity goal in a 1-1 tie with Needham.

BOYS SOCCER

Pembroke's Matt McAuliffe, Quinn Reilly and Dylan Baldwin (first varsity goal) scored in a 3-0 win over Quincy. Reilly added a pair of assists for the Titans (12-1-1), and goalkeeper Jack Eva posted the shutout.

Hingham's Will Matthews and Michael McNabb scored in a 2-1 win over Duxbury that clinched the Patriot League Keenan Division crown for the Harbormen (14-1).

Plymouth North's Josh Murray scored, assisted by Francis Amani, in a 1-1 tie with Marshfield.

Southeastern's Robbie White scored a goal, assisted on another and set up the third by drawing a penalty in a 3-1 win over Holbrook. White got the assist on a set-piece goal by Alvaro Alves Correia. Brian Breder scored from the penalty spot for the Hawks (9-3-2).

FIELD HOCKEY

Carver's Maddy Butler, Lily Mulready, Alana Burbine and Natalie Waitkus played well in a 2-0 loss to Middleboro.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

East Bridgewater's Olivia McManus, Miley Delcarmen and Paige Pavidis starred in a 3-0 win over Sandwich. Riley Egan was a defensive standout for the Vikings (11-6).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

East Bridgewater's Emmeline Holdsworth finished first for the Vikings in a 27-30 win over Abington on Senior Day. Grace Avery, Olivia Pennington, Molly Curtin and Claire Caulton also ran well for EB (5-2).

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

East Bridgewater's Ezra Blasko won his seventh race of the season and tied his own course record in a 15-50 victory over Abington. Colin DeChambeau finished second for the Vikings with a PR. Ben Levesque, Tommy Rhuda and Brodie Pak finished 3-4-5 for EB (7-1).

SWIMMING/DIVING

Notre Dame Academy's Grace Pistorino starred in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle in a 98-86 Senior Night win over Ursuline Academy. NDA's Kara Leahy won diving, and the Cougars captured the medley relay with the team of Ksenia Fiorentino, Amelia Castillo, Colbi Krause and Angela Kennedy.

Monday

BOYS GOLF

Hingham's Carson Erick was co-medalist with a 1-under-par 71 at Easton Country Club as the Harbormen secured a spot in the Division 1 state final by finishing second overall at the Div. 1 South qualifying tournament. Erick and teammate Drew Golden (5th, 3-over 74) earned spots in the Div. 1 individual tournament. Hingham, which also featured J.D. Flynn and William Gay, scored 307 as a team.

Wellesley won the team crown with a 299, led by co-medalist Ryan Keyes (71). Marshfield (318) was sixth in team scoring, along with Oliver Ames (7th, 322), Braintree (9th, 327), Plymouth South (11th, 342), North Quincy (12th, 343), Bridgewater-Raynham (13th, 348) and Plymouth North (14th, 349).

Oliver Ames' David Rodgers tied for sixth at 4-over 75. Among other top local finishers, Braintree's Peter Brooks and Marshfield's Jackson Faith finished tied for 15th at 7-over 78, and Braintree's A.J. Platek, Marshfield's Justin Ford and Oliver Ames' Sean Kearns and Braden Shapiro were part of a five-way tie for 18th at 8-over 79.

At the Div. 3 South qualifier at Wianno Golf Club in Osterville, Norwell was seventh in team scoring (352). Abington (384) was 10th and Carver (388) was 11th. The top three teams (St. John Paul II, Bourne and Nantucket) qualified for states. Norwell's Luke Dassatti was the top local finisher, shooting 16-over 86 as part of a five-way tie for 18th. Teammate Will Cartwright shot 88. Finn Manning (89) was Carver's top finisher, and Abington's Hunter Grafton was at 90.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hull senior co-captain Veronica Fleming had 2 goals and 2 assists in a 5-3 home win over Abington in the annual EM20 Game that raises money for the Emma Ryan Memorial Fund. Senior co-captain Sarah Duran added a goal and 2 assists for the Pirates (11-2-2), and Elly Thomas and Fallon Ryan had a goal each. Meghan Duran added an assist, and goalkeeper Montana Alibrandi played well. Hull is unbeaten in 11 straight games.

Norwell's Anya Johnson scored twice in a 5-2 win over Middleboro. Evvy Demong, Smilla Spasic and Hannah Morse also found the net for the Clippers (17-1-1). Jesica Perry had a goal and an assist for Middleboro, and Olivia Mather also scored.

Cardinal Spellman's Emma Pero scored twice in a 4-1 win over Archbishop Williams. Grace Foster and Saniyah Docanto (first varsity goal) also found the net, and Isa McDonough added three assists for the Cardinals (12-1-1).

Hingham's Hadley Bello and Ava Varholak scored for the Harborwomen (8-6-2) in a 2-2 tie with Plymouth North.

West Bridgewater's Rachael Geniuch and Kylie Fuller scored in a 4-2 loss to Greater New Bedford Voke. The Wildcats are 11-4.

Freshman Alana MacLean, sophomore Mallory Jaeger and Tressa Murphy all scored in Fontbonne's 3-1 win over Boston Trinity Academy. Reghan Sullivan and Emme Finnigan played well defensively.

BOYS SOCCER

Hanover's Liz Curtis had a hat trick, and Katie Radzik and Kate Baldinelli added goals for the Hawks (10-5-2) in an 8-0 win over Plymouth South. Nicole Mustone (goal), Samantha Baker (3 assists) and goalkeeper Olivia Campo (6 saves) also starred.

East Bridgewater's Lilly Cookson scored the lone goal, assisted by Reese Neale, in a 1-0 win over Wareham. Goalkeeper Teagan O'Connor posted her fifth shutout of the season.

Whitman-Hanson's Brooke Kreckler, Lillie MacKinnon and Lilly Jones played well in a 1-0 loss to Silver Lake.

Carver's Maddy Butler scored in a 4-1 loss to Westport. Ali Perry made 17 saves for the Crusaders.

North Quincy senior captains Elle Blahut (6 assists. 15 digs, 8 aces) and Ava Bryan (23 digs, 11 kills) starred on Senior Night as the Raiders (15-3) rallied to beat Plymouth North, 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-17, 25-17). Sadie Johnston (30 assists, 18 digs), Kathy Mo (20 digs) and Brooklyn Rizzo (9 digs, 13 kills) also stood out for NQ.

Oliver Ames' Claire O’Rourke had 24 service points, 7 aces and 8 kills in a 3-0 win (25-8, 25-22, 25-13) over Sharon. Sarah Hilliard added 18 kills, and Rachel Fleischman (16 digs) and Addyson Smock (6 kills, 3 solo blocks) also starred for the Tigers (14-4).

Braintree junior Chloe Zhong had 14 assists to set a new program career record in a 3-2 loss to Durfee.

South Shore Tech's Fenway Valiente served 11/11 with 3 aces, and Alyssa Viola served 11/11 with 2 aces in a 3-0 loss to Bristol-Plymouth. Hannah Nota added 6 kills and 18 digs for the Vikings (14-4), and Julia da Silva served 8/8 with 2 aces and 17 digs.

East Bridgewater's Liv McManus had a career-high 12 kills as the Vikings battled back from an 0-2 deficit to beat Norwell, 3-2. Ayla Kingman had 7 assists and 6 aces as EB qualified for the state tournament for the third consecutive year.

Whitman-Hanson's Riley Codero had 9 digs, and Caroline Gray (15 assists, 12 kills) and Leah Barnett (11 assists) starred for the Panthers (14-4) in a 3-0 win (26-24, 25-18, 25-23) over Scituate.
