Golf pioneer Renee Powell will be enshrined into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 17 at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower.

An East Canton native and Central Catholic High School graduate, Powell became the second African American to compete on the LPGA Tour and the first African American woman to become a member of the PGA. She played in more than 250 tournaments from 1967-80.

Powell's father, Bill, who encountered racial discrimination on golf courses, designed and built a course where all were welcome. Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, which opened in 1948, became the first course in the United States designed, built and owned by an African American. Renee Powell later became Clearview's head pro.

Joining Powell in the hall of fame this year will be former Cleveland Browns and Kent State player Josh Cribbs, former International Management Group President and CEO Bob Kain and longtime Cleveland Collinwood girls track and field coach Lou Slapnik.
