Girls tennis: NLS advances 2 singles players, doubles team

Oct. 11—ROGERS — The New London-Spicer girls tennis team advanced two singles players and a doubles team into the Section 6A semifinals after the initial rounds were played Wednesday at the Rogers Tennis Club.

The Wildcats' Amyra Gamez and Ella Wieland will meet in the semifinals Tuesday at the Rogers Tennis Club.

Gamez advanced by beating Minnewaska's Rachel Rankin 6-1, 7-6 (2) in the quarterfinals after opening with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sauk Centre's Samantha Gregory.

Wieland beat Melrose's Gretta Hellermann 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa's Presley Detloff 6-1, 6-0 in Wieland's first match.

Also in the singles semifinals are Osakis' Leah Maddock and Bria Hoffarth.

Meanwhile, NLS' Delaney Hanson and Madisyn Claseman are in the doubles semifinals playing Minnewaska's Alia Randt and Megan Thorfinnson.

In the other doubles semifinal match are Litchfield's Isla Dille and Olivia Olson, who play Osakis' Madeline Anderson and Lauren Anderson.

Hanson and Claseman advanced by beating Osakis' Brenna Moena nd Bella Weisser in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-4. The Wildcats duo opened play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Melrose's Addison Kemper and Rachel Welle.

Randt and Thorfinnson beat Melrose's Jessica Pohlmann and Anessa Redepenning 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The Lakers duo opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alayna Neal and Varrsha Chenthuren of St. John's Prep.

Dille and Olson, the Litchfield duo, beat NLS' Jadyn Proehl and Brianna Wileman 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and Arlene Tensen and Grace Berndt 6-0, 6-0 in their match.

At stake are two singles and two doubles team berths into the state Class A tournament beginning Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

NLS already has qualified for the team tournament, which gets underway Tuesday, Oct 24 at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center.
