Girls Best of the Week: North Union shows improvement in CBC Tournament in Plain City

PLAIN CITY — The North Union girls bowling team has come a long way over the past year.

The Wildcats shot a 3,463, which was 764 pins better than their performance a year earlier at the Central Buckeye Conference Girls Bowling Tournament held at Plain City Lanes.

Montana Donohue rolled a school record for three games, posting a 233-212-223 668, while Lexi Bahan added a 564 and Ryleigh Rasey a 549. North Union also set a school record for a Baker game score with a 223.

In a regular season match, North Union defeated Northwestern 2,312-2,255 with Rasey posting a 347, Donohue a 343, Alyssa Frisco a 338, Emma McCaul a 324 and Bahan a 322. In a 2,233-2,161 loss to Indian Lake, Rasey led with a 356, Bahan with a 352 and Donohue with a 327. McCaul had a 370, Bahan a 367, Donohue a 355 and Rasey a 311 in a 2,549-2,280 loss to Graham. In a tight, 2,201-2,159 loss to Northwestern, Frisco had a 361, Rasey a 354 and McCaul a 321.

More Bowling

● Pleasant topped Elgin 1,942-1,660 as Kenzie Childers led the Spartans with a 354 followed by Peyton Walters at 350, Breahna Howard at 349 and Ashlyn Peters at 339. For Elgin, Bethany Strong had a 369 series with a 208 game, while Bre Fox added a 315. The Spartans also beat Marion Harding 1,938-1,643 with Peters getting a 204 game and 385 series, Howard a 198 game for a 346 series and Childers a 317. Megan Adamson shot a 347 for Harding.

● Hannah Mullennix produced a 344 series to lead Harding to a 1,684-1,472 win over Shelby. In a 1,889-1,680 loss at Suburban Lanes in Bucyrus to Wynford, Kyllie Myers shot a 161 game and 302 series for the Presidents.

● River Valley's Alexis Manning fired a 258 game en route to a 474 series as the Vikings beat Elgin 1,881-1,597. Strong had a 207 game and 398 series. In another match with the Comets, RV prevailed 1,875-1,730. Manning had a 248 game and 432 series, while Strong had a 315 series and teammate Kadance Rudd a 199 game.

● Highland beat Shelby 1,453-1,306 despite being down a bowler. Elyssa Reigles paced the Scots with a 182-234 416.

● Galion's Victory Lanes hosted the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference Girls Bowling Tournament as East Knox shot a 3,035 to win it. Fredericktown was runner-up at 2,952 followed by Northmor's 2,932, Cardington's 2,786, Mount Gilead's 2,487 and Centerburg's 2,218.

● Olivia Nastasi of East Knox won the KMAC championship with a 164-170-200 534, while Cardington's Miranda Kintz was runner-up with a 158-213-142 513. Rounding out the top 10 were Northmor's Emma Rinehart at 506, Northmor's Emily Ball at 486, Fredericktown's Noel Mitchell at 476, East Knox's Miale Hurlow and Fredericktown's Riley Rine at 458 each, East Knox's McKayla Blakely at 445, Fredericktown's Pink Payne at 427 and Mount Gilead's Jacey Snelling at 422.

Basketball

● Elgin gave Perry its first Northwest Central Conference loss of the season with a 53-40 victory. Sam Girton led the Comets with 20 points and three steals, while Madison Hill pulled down 15 rebounds, and Jordan Wall chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds and Maycee Muselin 11 points.

● Pleasant handled Marion Harding 58-36 behind 18 points from Whitney Waddell, 14 from Avah Steele and eight each from Taydon Obenour and Olivia Pratt. In a 44-39 loss to Centerburg, Waddell had 13, Steele 12 and Emerson Williams 11.

North Union took care of Elgin 67-30. For the Wildcats, Audrey Benedict scored 20 points, Zoe Wedding 12 points, Kailyn Colegrove 11 points and seven rebounds, Gabby Lindsey seven assists and five steals, Brenna Martino nine rebounds and Addison Wedding eight rebounds.

● Benedict registered 20 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals in a 64-17 North Union win over Northwestern. Addison Wedding scored 11, Kennedy Harrah 10 and Brenna Martino had seven rebounds. In a 57-44 win over Graham, Benedict had 13 points, Gabby Lindsey 11 and Zoe and Addison Wedding nine apiece. Mechanicsburg rolled in a 54-35 win over the Wildcats. Lindsey and Harrah had 10 points each, Benedict nine points and three steals and Addison Wedding eight rebounds.

● Cardington used overtime to beat Buckeye Central 47-45 with Abbi Hardwick getting 17 points and Jill Bertke 11. The Pirates romped in a 50-17 win over Lucas with Hardwick getting 14 and Celia Hall nine. In a 54-38 loss to Clear Fork, Hardwick scored nine points.

● Highland's Bryleigh Young and MaKaylee Merckling combined for 17 points in a 36-30 loss to Ontario. The Scots posted a 48-45 win over Mount Gilead with Young recording 15 points, Merckling 11 and Reagan Maibach eight

● Ridgedale fell to Waynesfield-Goshen 47-33 with Brenda Scott putting up 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Rockets. Maddie McKenzie scored 10 in a 43-27 loss to East Knox. Ridgedale rolled in a 42-26 win over Crestline led by Lauren Leslie's 12 points and 17 rebounds and Scott's nine points. Leslie had 16 and Camryn Thiel 11 in a 51-44 loss to Cory-Rawson.

● Marion Harding's Aniya Mitchell put up 15 points, five rebounds and eight steals and Adley Haines had five steals in a 39-36 win over Mount Vernon. During a 36-35 win over Ontario, Haines paced with 13 points and seven rebounds as Mitchell added 12 points and eight steals and Bre Card six rebounds.

● Mount Gilead edged Cardington 49-45 with Aubrey Thomas getting 14 points, Faith White 14 points and six rebounds, Greer Simpson seven rebounds and Danielle Pohlkotte six assists. Bertke had 17 and Madison Caulkins 11 for the Pirates.

● White put up 16 points, Pohlkotte 12 and Thomas nine rebounds and five steals in a 39-35 MG loss to East Knox. The Indians also fell to Bucyrus 55-40 with Simpson getting 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals, Thomas 12 points, White 10 rebounds and Pohlkotte nine points.

● Northmor got around Galion 57-29 as Alexis See produced 11 points and seven rebounds and Ryann Brinkman added five steals. No Golden Knights scored more than seven points in a 40-31 loss to Mapleton. Northmor's Shelby Cooper had 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Claire Tackett had four steals in a 59-36 loss to Wynford.

● Marion Harding's Hannah Mullennix shot a 513 to finish second at the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference Girls Bowling Tournament at Victory Lanes in Galion.

● North Union's Montana Donohue shot a 668, which is a school record, at the Central Buckeye Conference Girls Bowling Tournament.

● Voting for this week's new polls will be conducted at MarionStar.com and its app through early Sunday morning.

● In the last girls poll, Ridgedale bowler Aubrie Smith, who was the Northwest Central Conference runner-up by three pins with a 194.5 average, took 1,084 of 31,46 votes (35 percent) to win it. Other nominees were Elgin bowler Bethany Strong, Mount Gilead basketball's Aubrey Thomas, River Valley wrestler Kylee Sardina, North Union bowler Montana Donohue and Marion Harding bowler Hannah Mullennix.
