Girls basketball roundup: Harness reaches 2k, Tolen makes history, Tippner clears 1,000

LAFAYETTE — At some point during Alli Harness' second-ever varsity basketball game, Carroll (Flora) coach Brady Wiles turned to assistant coach Kyle Wagner and asked at what point they should tell the then-freshman guard to stop shooting. After putting up 16 points in game one, Harness was in the throes of a pretty dreadful four-point performance that saw her convert just 1-of-19 field goals and 0-of-10 3-point tries.

Brady, she's going to win you a lot of games. You tell her to shoot more.

That freshman is now a senior Western Michigan commit, the Cougars' all-time leading scorer and, as of Tuesday night, the newest member of the 2,000-point club.

The Junior Indiana All-Star entered Tuesday's contest with 1,982 and quickly set about acquiring the requisite 18, drilling four 3-pointers in the first half. Harness said the crowd tipped her off that she was nearing the milestone, with the sizable Carroll contingent holding their breath every time she touched the ball between the second and third quarters. "I kind of had a feeling, because they were clapping a lot," Harness laughed.

Just three points away from the 2,000-point mark from her career, Harness launched an errant 3-pointer on the Cougars' first possession of the second half, then missed a 2-point try moments later. She was fouled on her third shot attempt of the quarter, sending her to the line for three free throw attempts.

Harness sank all three and Wiles quickly called timeout as the Carroll players swarmed their teammate in front of the bench.

Carroll assistant coach Adam Harness hugged his daughter when she returned to the bench, while Alli's mom organized Alli's two younger sisters and a couple of their cousins underneath the basket, making sure their "2-0-0-0" shirts were in the proper order.

"It meant so much (to have my family there)," said Harness, whose grandma keeps score for Carroll. "They come to every one of my games, even a lot of my AAU games. I'm just blessed to have the kind of support system and community I have. They've supported me every step of the way, same with my teammates and coaches. I'm really blessed."

Harness finished with 22 points, leaving her with 2,004 for her career.

Tolen breaks West Lafayette's all-time scoring record

Adrianne Tolen became the all-time leading scorer in West Lafayette history (boys and girls) in the first quarter Tuesday night against Lafayette Central Catholic.

The Missouri S&T commit has 1,412 career points (and counting).

"It feels great," Tolen told Ethan Hanson of the Lafayette Journal & Courier. "I have to give all the thanks to my team. They are my biggest supporters. The countless hours in the gym paid off."

"She's an incredible player but an even better person," coach Jane Schott added. "She's a great teammate who works her tail off and I never have to tell her to go hard. She's always locked in and trying to become a better player and make her teammates better around her."

Also of note: LCC junior Carley Barrett was recognized prior to the game for clearing 1,000 career points Saturday vs. Rensselaer Central.

More milestones and records

A few more from Monday and Tuesday (it's been a real active couple of days)...

∎ Noblesville junior Meredith Tippner eclipsed 1,000 career points Tuesday night amidst a 24-point effort vs. Mt. Vernon. Tippner — who's averaging around 16 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists per game — is the 11th 1,000-point scorer in program history and the seventh in the past 16 years.

Tippner is the second active Miller with over 1,000 career points, joining senior teammate Reagan Wilson.

∎ After not having any 1,000-point scorers in over 20 years — it's typically a very balanced scoring attack — Columbia City added its second of the season with senior Huntington commit Kyndra Sheets clearing the milestone Tuesday with a couple free throws. Her milestone performance came on the same night the program honored junior Addi Baxter for reaching 1,000 career points at the Hall of Fame Classic in December.

∎ Shelbyville's Ella Johnson broke her own record for most rebounds in a game, logging 22 boards in a 43-33 win over Rushville. She also logged 11 points. Johnson originally set the record with 21 rebounds in the season opener vs. Waldron.

∎ Evansville Reitz guard Norah Miller became the third player in program history to reach 1,000 career points on Monday.
