What seemed early on like a game destined to be tight changed in the second quarter ,when host Mahopac, which trailed by three after one, outscored the Huskers 14-4 for a 21-14 lead at the half.

Mahopax was dominant on the boards and picked Yorktown's pocket multiple times, transforming steals into points.

Yorktown, whcih also scored only four points in the closing quarter, could never muster momentum.

Mahopac essentially sealed the game early in the third quarter when the Wolf Pack answered Husker Olivia DelGaudio's opening 3-pointer with an offensive put-back by Fiona O'Boyle, an O'Boyle jumper for another score, a Juliana Mangione score off a batted away ball and, after a Yorktown free throw, a Madysen Ford 3-point play off aher beautiful inside move and underhand scoop for the bucket and a follow-up foul shot.

At that point, Mahopac led 30-18 and never looked back, finishing the third quarter up 39-24.

Ford finished with 14 points. Adriana Pranzo hit for 9, O'Boyle, who was strong on the boards, had 8, and Cally Salon hit for 6.

Yorktown, which ended its season 10-10, was led by senior Kaitlyn Judge, who had a game-high 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

Mahopac will travel to No. 3-seed Harrison for its Class AA quarterfinal game.

Non-Section 1 games

Sunday, March 2

Catholic High School Athletic Association

Tier 2 City Championship

Kennedy Catholic 67, Fontbonne Hall 39

It was their 18th win of the season.

An easy one but bigger than all the rest.

The Kennedy Gaels girls basketball team captured its first ever Tier 2 city championship Sunday to move a step closer to a possible state title.

As part of a balanced Gael scoring attack, Madi Lopez and Madison Carlo both hit for 13 points and Tara Devaney also reached double figures with 12 as the Gaiels routed Fontbonne Hall 67-39 at Manhattanville College.

Valentina Caggiano led Fontbonne with 11 points.

Kennedy will now play St, Mary's Lancaster in the Catholic state Class A semifinals Friday at Cardinal Spellman High in the Bronx.

That game is slated to tip off at 5:30 p.m.

The winner will play for the state championshp Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hofstra University on Long Island vs. l be the winner of Sacred Heart Academy (the Long Island representative) vs. Fontbonne Hall Academy (Brooklyn/Queens Representative)

Kennedy, which swiched from Section 1, the local public school conference, to the CHSAA a decade ago, has enjoyed unparalelled success since its move.

Among its 18 wins are three victories over Section 1 teams, including last year's state Class AA runner-up, White Plains and, in its CHSAA league semifinals, Staten Island's St. Joseph's Prep, currently ranked, by MaxPreps, No. 22 in the state among girls programs.

Still, Kennedy will enter Friday's game as the underdog.

MaxPreps has St. Mary's, 17-8, ranked 23rd in the state and Kennedy, 18-10, ranked 75th.

Part of the Gaels' task will be to limit the damage inflicted by the Lancers' 5-11 point guard, Emily McDonald.

Although only a sophomore, McDonald is talented enough to already have received collegiate offers from several Divison I college progams, including Dayton, Canisius, Buffalo and St. Bonaventure., Kennedy coach Dominick Tassone noted.

"We need to keep her out of the paint, make her earn everything she gets. She shoots it well from 3. We will have to defend the 3-point line, as well," Tassone said.

Another focal point on defense for Kennedy will be guard Jada Mushat, who's scoring at a 15.5 per-game clip.

"Jada is a great athlete that likes to get out and run. We will have to pay very close attention to her on fast breaks and force her to pass the ball," Tassone said.

Tassone indicated his team, which is aveaging 55-plus points a game, compared to St. Mary's 62-plus, will focus on defense first.

"The game will be won on the defensive end," he predicted. "If we can defend the 3-point line, cut down their fast-break points and limit their second-chance opportunities, I believe we will put ourselves in a good position to win the game. "

The Kennedy Catholic girls basketball team after it won its first ever CHSAA championship Feb. 25, 2024.jpg

When the Kennedy Catholic girls basketball team started the 2023-24 season it did so as a team in transition.

Three good players had transferred to other schools and its coach had also left for another program.

Since leaving Section 1 in 2014 and joining the Catholic High School Athletic Association, the Gaels had not won a girls basketball title.

But that changed Sunday.

Sparked by senior Madi Lopez's 21 points, Kennedy beat Moore Catholic 53-50 to win the CHSAA girls Division 2 league crown and qualify for the state CHSAA tournament.

The Gaels, who'd split with Moore during the regular season, had trailed by seven points with fewer than five minutes left.

They will now play Fontbonne Academy at 1 p.m. Sunday for the Tier 2 City Championship.

Kennedy has beaten that Brooklyn school twice this season.

Win or lose, they will then advance to play the Catholic league Buffalo winner March 8 at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx.

That game is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.

Sunday's game vs. Moore came down to the wire.

Lopez , who also had four rebounds and four assists, gave Kennedy, (now 17-10 overall and 6-6 in league play) the lead, making two free throws with 13 seconds to play.

Then, playing tough defense, Lauren Fox drew an offensive foul call on Moore to end the game.

Madison Carlo and Gianna Carlo combined for seven 3-pointers for Kennedy, scoring 12 and 9 points, respectively.

Jordan Field led Moore with 13 points.

Kennedy had previously fallen to Moore on the road 63-37 and beaten it at home 64-51.

Kennedy's last only other finals appearance was in 2014. It fell to Spellman 62-59.

First-year coach Dominick Tassone, whose team has now won five of its last six games, said his team's transition after losing the three strong players was "pretty smooth."

"The girls bought in pretty quickly. Athough we started out 1-3, we felt like we were playing pretty good basketball," he said.

A big win came in early December, when the Gaels routed last year's public school state Class AA champion White Plains 70-46.

"Defeating White Plains feels like a turning point in our season," Tassone said. "The focus all year for us has been defense, and we have been consistent all year in that department. It was fitting that the last play (Sunday) resulted in an offensive foul from Moore. "

Of his team rebounding in the last couple of minutes, he added, "that showed unbelievable character and spirit."
