Girls basketball: Gardner-area girls update, results and scoring leaders
After a quick two weeks to start the season, girls basketball athletes have a chance to relax for a few days before getting back into their schedules. To start of the season, here is how the Gardner-area girls teams have competed thus far.
Gardner
The Gardner girls basketball team is undefeated through five games to begin the 2023-24 season. The team has won every game by more than 10 points, showing promise right off the bat.
The Wildcats are led by Tati Vazquez, who came out immediately and made an impact. Vazquez scored 20 in the opening game of the season, and followed that up with consistent double-digit numbers. She is averaging 18.2 points per game and is a huge force for Gardner’s offense.
Krista Bettez is another key part of that offense. Averaging 10.4 points per game, Bettez is a threat on the court alongside Vazquez and helps to push the speed and quickness of the team.
Olivia Powers and Emma McNamara have been adding to the scoring efforts as well. Putting in 5-7 points per game, they help to spread the wealth across the board and give balance to the offense.
Gardner has proven to be unstoppable thus far, and will continue to test this boundary as they face Main South, Murdock and West Boylston in the coming weeks.
Quabbin
Quabbin has gotten off to a strong 4-1 start this season. The Panthers have won against Worcester Tech, Narragansett, Clinton and Maynard and suffered a loss in the middle to Hudson.
Meaghan Doyle, one of the Panthers leaders from last season, is picking up where she left off. Doyle is averaging 11.2 points per game and had a season-high so far of 14 points against Hudson.
Along with Doyle is Mia Ducos who opened the season with 11 points in the win vs. Worcester Tech. Brianna Whitelaw added 15 that game as well and is another that makes a consistent impact on the court.
Abby Rogowski is someone who gets in the mix, also having a big season opener with 11 points.
Quabbin takes on Oakmont and Groton-Dunstable in the first week back after Christmas, and will see Lunenburg and Tyngsborough shortly after that.
Narragansett
Narragansett is 2-2 going into the winter break. The Warriors started the season off with back to back losses against Gardner and Quabbin, but have been able to turn it around with some victories. They defeated Bromfield 53-27 and most recently, Parker Charter 59-9.
Leading the scoring is Amanda Iannacone who averages 13.8 points. She scored 19 points against Gardner and later contributed 17 points in the Warriors’ victory over Bromfield.
Brielle Haddocks (7.3 ppg) and Lily Celata (6.8) also help offensively, as well as Booke Haddocks who averages 5.3 points per game.
Narragansett will face Murdock on December 29 in its next game of the season. Also coming up on the schedule are Sizer, Tahanto and Mahar.
Murdock
Murdock is 1-1, not having played quite as many games as some other teams due to the school’s ongoing boiler issues. After a tough 71-7 loss against West Boylston, the Blue Devils bounced back for a victory over Parker Charter.
Shannon Connolly scored a whopping 34 points in the win against Parker Charter, sinking four 3-pointers. Sadie Bauver added 11 points and Lily Lee and Holly Harris were other contributors to the total. Connolly and Bauver combined for the 7 points against West Boylston.
After a big win, Murdock has some strong competitors next up – Narragansett, Gardner and Ayer-Shirley for its upcoming few games.
Monty Tech
Monty Tech is 1-3, taking three losses and most recently notching a win against David Prouty. Despite starting off with the first three games not going their way, the Bulldogs were playing hard and finding their rhythm.
Finally they were able to break through and grab a victory, a positive note to end off on before the holiday break.
Kylie Neseran and Cassidy Boutell lead Monty Tech’s offense, both averaging right around 7 points per game. Other contributors include Candace Haley, Jayda DeCarlo and Paige Gadarwoski, who dropped 14 points in the win against Prouty.
The Bulldogs have a nice break into the new year and will face off against St. Bernard’s for the second time this season on January 3.
Oakmont
Oakmont is also 1-3, suffering losses to Hudson, Littleton and Shepherd Hill and beating North Middlesex in a close 29-26 matchup.
The Spartans have a balanced scoring effort, seeing contributions from a lot of different players across the board. Kyra Pappas and Molly Horgan are two main contributors. Pappas scored 10 points against Littleton and Horgan also scored 10 this season, against Shepherd Hill.
Ella Dellasanta, Addie Collette and Alison Hazel are among others that add to Oakmont’s offense, offering solid numbers each game.
The team will face off against Quabbin on December 27, and follow up with some more tough competition with Ayer-Shirey and Westborough in January.
