Giants vs. Jets predictions: Our expert picks for 'MetLife Bowl' in NFL Week 8

The Giants (2-5, last in NFC East) will play host the Jets in the 2023 regular-season version of the "MetLife Bowl" this weekend at MetLife Stadium.

Last weekend in the Meadowlands, the G-Men got their second win of the season with a 14-7 victory over the Washington Commanders.

Meanwhile, the Jets are coming off a bye week after defeating the previously unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles 20-14 at MetLife Stadium in Week 6.

Our prognosticators are: Art Stapleton (Giants/NFL writer, NorthJersey.com), Bert Bainbridge (sports betting analyst/columnist, NorthJersey.com), Steve Edelson (columnist, APP.com), Vince Mercogliano (Rangers/NHL columnist, lohud.com), Brian Marron (digital producer, NorthJersey.com), Chris Iseman (Rutgers writer, NorthJersey.com), Dave Rivera (sports editor, USA Today Northeast/NorthJersey.com) and Bob Jordan (sports editor, Asbury Park Press/APP.com).

Through seven weeks, here are the standings for our staff members:

Mercogliano: 7-0

Rivera & Iseman: 6-1

Marron, Edelson & Bainbridge: 5-2

Stapleton: 4-3

Jordan: 2-3

Here are our staff predictions for this Week 8 contest in the Meadowlands between the Giants and Jets:

The Jets have not won their game post-bye since 2015, which spans three different head coaches (Todd Bowles, Adam Gase and Robert Saleh). They are coming off a significant victory over the Eagles, of course, and we already know the Giants rarely do that, no matter the era. There's no question the Jets defense will give the Giants' offensive problems. Still, you have to wonder how momentum plays here: the Giants' defense with Wink Martindale scheming up against Zach Wilson has an advantage. The Giants have lost the last two regular season games in this series, with their last win coming on Christmas Eve 2011 - we all remember that one.

If the Giants can protect the football and force Wilson into a few mistakes, they can steal this one. The rest of the season might depend on it.

The pick: Giants 21, Jets 16

Vince Mercogliano

The Giants have to feel relieved about getting back in the win column last week, but the Jets have a talent advantage at pretty much every position. They're coming off a bye week that allowed them to get healthy, particularly in the secondary, and can smell a playoff push with a favorable schedule from here on out.

The pick: Jets 23, Giants 10

Bert Bainbridge

Yes the Giants were able to get back in the win column last Sunday afternoon. However, there's a big difference between the Commanders and Jets defense this season. I don't see the G-Men being able to overcome a defense that's slowed down the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen so far in 2023.

The pick: Jets 17, Giants 13

The Giants offense finally scored a touchdown on Sunday (they actually scored two) for the first time in a month, but it's going to have to step it this week against this Jets defense. That's a lot to ask for these days. The Jets may not light up the scoreboard either, but I'm going with their defense to win this one.

The pick: Jets 19, Giants 13

Chris Iseman

Sure, the Giants beat the Commanders and give credit to the way their defense played, but I still don't know how much you can take away from that. Washington isn't a good team. I like the Jets coming off the bye. I think their defense will do enough to limit the Giants' offense.

The pick: Jets 17, Giants 13

Bob Jordan

Admit it, heading into the "Backup Quarterback Bowl" you thought either the Giants or Jets or both would be at six wins by now - instead of having a combined five wins.

The pick: Jets 21, Giants 10

Steve Edelson

The Jets’ win over Philadelphia was a big moment. The Eagles are very good, and it showed what level the Jets are capable of if their defense is playing at an elite level. That’s the difference in this one. The Giants are going to struggle to score enough.

The pick: Jets 24, Giants 17

Brian Marron

Defense will reign supreme in a game featuring two anemic offenses that each rank among the five worst in football in terms of yards gained per game.

The Jets certainly hold an advantage in that department, although the Giants have been stout of late by allowing just three touchdowns combined over the last two games. Big Blue is still struggling to force turnovers though, tied for second to last in the NFL with just six takeaways.

Turnovers are one area where the Jets excel (13 on the year), and that will likely be the difference in what should be a bit of a rock fight. The Jets will force a takeaway late, giving Zach Wilson a short field to seal the game.

The pick: Jets, 20, Giants 10
