Giants lose 2022 draft pick as Panthers cut Ryan Santoso

Back in late August, the New York Giants traded kicker Ryan Santoso to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for conditional seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

There was one caveat, however.

In order for Carolina to surrender that pick, Santoso had to make the team’s 53-man roster and then appear in two regular-season games.

Santoso did make the roster and he did start in Week 1 for the Panthers, connecting on two field goals which proved to be the difference in a 19-14 victory over the New York Jets.

On the downside, Santoso missed one of his two point after attempts and that was enough for Carolina to reconsider his job.

On Tuesday, the Panthers officially cut Santoso and in doing so, prevented that conditional seventh-round pick from going to the Giants.

The 6-foot-5, 258-pound Santoso entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of Minnesota in 2018. He has spent time with the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans, as well as the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL (two stints), before joining the Giants in 2020.

“He can do whatever. Ryan can punt, kick — I’m serious, he’s very talented and he’s punted in NFL games before, he’s kicked off, he can kick field goals, so Ryan is a very talented young man,” Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey said last month. “Ryan has great upside, he’s a good man, he works his tail off. That’s what this league is all about, it’s about competition and hopefully Ryan can do enough where he can get a job, whether it’s here or somewhere else.”

With Carolina retaining that seventh-round pick, the Giants are back down to 10 selection in the 2022 NFL draft.
