Giants’ Jason Garrett tests positive for COVID-19, Freddie Kitchens will call plays
The New York Giants announced on Thursday morning that offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has tested positive for COVID-19.
Garrett will continue to work with the team remotely, but tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens will assume play calling duties against his former team, the Cleveland Browns, on Sunday night.
“Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett has tested positive for COVID-19. He will continue to work remotely. Tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens will serve as the team’s offensive play caller on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns,” the team said in a statement.
“We are currently working with the league’s chief medical officer regarding close contacts. Because of the league’s most updated protocols, Giants coaches and players did not meet on either Monday or Tuesday, and the majority of the coaching staff worked remotely.
“At this point, there appear to be no high risk close contacts. We are awaiting confirmation from the league. Out of an abundance of caution, the Giants will meet remotely and will not practice today.”
The Giants had already rescheduled Thursday’s practice and moved it to MetLife Stadium as a result of inclement weather. Winter Storm Gail dumped several inches up to more than two feet of snow across the Northeast overnight.
The team is expected to return to practice on Friday afternoon pending further COVID-19 test results.
