Giants fall to Seahawks, 24-3, in latest prime time embarrassment

The New York Giants hosted the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium on Monday Night Football in a matchup of 2022 NFC playoff teams.

The Giants played again without their All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley (ankle).

But all of that was the least of their worries. The Giants were once again humiliated on national television, soundly beaten in all three phases of the game and completely out-coached. It was their worst performance in more than a decade.

With the loss, the Giants fall to 1-3 on the season.

Keys to the game

  • The Giants played the game with a makeshift offensive line due to injuries during the game. They allowed 11 sacks and could not keep quarterback Daniel Jones safe all game.

  • Jones, feeling the pressure, turned the football over in key spots that led to 17 Seattle points.

  • The Giants only managed a 3.0 yards per gain average on passing plays.

  • Daniel Jones is the first quarterback to throw a pick-6 and get sacked 11 times in a game since 1985.

  • The Giants’ longest rush was by Jones (17 yards) and the longest reception was by running back Matt Brieda for 22 yards

It was over when...

Seattle rookie defensive back Devon Witherspoon picked off a Daniel Jones pass on the Seahawks’ three-yard line and returned it 97 yards for a score.

With the score 14-3, the Giants had a second-and-five on the Seattle five with 1:03 left in the third quarter. A touchdown would have narrowed the score to 14-10.

Instead, they went down, 21-3, and the way the offense was playing, there was no way they were climbing out of that hole.

Players of the game

  • Inside linebacker Bobby Okereke led the Giants’ defense with 11 total tackles (two for a loss) and deflected a pass.

  • Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson caught four of six targets for 40 yards and rushed for seven yards on one attempt.

  • Outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux had two sacks and could not find the handle on a batted pass that could have gone for a pick-six.

Injuries

Rookie center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) left the game in the first quarter to be evaluated in the locker room and was replaced by Ben Bredeson, who moved over from guard. Shane Lemieux came in to replace Bredeson at guard. Schmitz was ruled out in the second quarter.

Tight end Daniel Bellinger also left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury and was ruled out shortly after.

Guard Shane Lemieux (abductor) was ruled out of the game in the fourth quarter.
