After Giannis signs extension, Bucks fans celebrate and roast doubters on social media
If you were one of the many local sports fans who believed global NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo was going to remain with the Milwaukee Bucks beyond next season, your Christmas arrived about two months early.
Monday was a night to say "I told you so."
(And some of you did).
Antetokounmpo took to social media to announce that he had signed a three-year extension to stay with the Bucks through at least the 2026-27 season (the 2027-28 year is a player option), putting Bucks fans in a celebratory state three nights before the tip-off Milwaukee's 2023-24 season.
And many Bucks and NBA supporters were quick to burn those who doubted Giannis' loyalty to the city and the franchise, especially ESPN's Brian Windhorst.
Windhorst, a veteran national NBA writer who hosts the popular NBA podcast, "The Hoop Collective," predicted in the offseason that the chance of Antetokounmpo re-signing with the Bucks was "50-50 at best."
"I would say right now it's 50/50 at best and I don't think that's new information. I think the Bucks knew that already. They knew that even before they got knocked out out of the playoffs last year. If you look at the Bucks’ roster, which is primarily in its 30s, if you look at their asset base, which is depleted, and you look at Giannis, who’s 28 years old, these are on different tracks. It’s not impossible they could pull some sort of maneuver – and I don’t think any of this comes as a surprise to the Bucks. I think it’s uncomfortable that he’s being so public about it, I think this is the way it is."
Oops.
Windhorst said all this, of course, before general manager Jon Horst pulled off the trade that sent Jrue Holiday to Portland for Damien Lillard. That possibly would have changed his opinion.
But gleeful Bucks fans pounced immediately:

50/50 at best?? @WindhorstESPN
Swing and a miss. Again.

Brian Windhorst’s percentage on Giannis scoops has been so bad, you’d almost have to TRY to be as wrong as he’s been.

I have a few questions for Brian Windhorst pic.twitter.com/peCfNmw7Mw

But let's get back to the rejoicing that Giannis signed a year early.
Sure, he has a mural, but maybe its time to just build his statue in front of Fiserv Form starting tomorrow.
Milwaukee is truly blessed and forever indebted to you Giannis
You have changed the City of Milwaukee forever
We are so lucky to call you a Milwaukee Buck and to continue this journey together is a phenomenal gift
LETS RAISE ANOTHER TROPHY NOW#FearTheDeer https://t.co/udq3l565P8— Paul Henning (@brewcitypaul) October 23, 2023
Let's all just take a quick second to realize how lucky we are to have @Giannis_An34
He could've left for a bigger market. He could've wanted what the whole media world wanted. He could've wanted all the glam & bright lights.
He didn't. #FearTheDeer #Extended pic.twitter.com/MEiVMQkUsG— Wisconsin Clothing Company (@WiscoClothingCo) October 23, 2023
BUCK FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!

He’s so loyal! It only took threatening the front office to trade for a top 10 player to make him re-sign! We need more guys like Giannis in the NBA! https://t.co/rHPvT6MClA

This deal gives Antetokounmpo a chance to earn more money over the course of his career with that player option in 2027-2028. Because of the Over-38 rule in the CBA, he can sign a short-term deal again with the Bucks in 2026 and another four-year extension with the Bucks in 2028. https://t.co/tqSPoqQs1h

And if this keeps up, a monument for Horst perhaps as well? He's now pulled off a second trade for an NBA superstar, which convinced his franchise player to stick around for at least four more years.
That's a pretty decent few weeks for your organization and fan base.
Been quite a month for the Bucks: swinging a trade for Damian Lillard on the eve of training camp, and now gets a signature on a Giannis Antetokounmpo extension on the eve of the regular season starting. https://t.co/43R38K9tYV

Jon Horst remains one of the most underrated GM’s not just in the NBA, but sports. Acquiring Dame and extending Giannis in the same off-season…WOW.

Jon Horst landed Lillard and got Giannis's name on an extension in the span of a few weeks.
That's Exec of the Year stuff.— Chris Mannix (@SIChrisMannix) October 23, 2023
Jon Horst is EXCEPTIONAL and no longer on my radar. He’s retained a superstar in a small market TWO TIMES and traded for another. BIG BOSS.

Bucks fans, this is truth, it's really not a dream.
The amount of joy all Bucks fans have had since the Dame trade is insane I can’t believe this is real

But Knicks and Lakers fans can keep dreaming.
The Knicks and Lakers are monitoring the Giannis situation to see what he does in 2029 https://t.co/0svhZrzA9C
