GC Girls Basketball: Rice edges Gunter 59-58, heads for Arkansas Tournament

Nov. 30—GUNTER — The Rice Lady Bulldogs pulled out a thriller on the road Tuesday, edging Gunter 59-58 to improve to 3-1.

Saniya Burks poured in 30 points, grabbed six rebounds, handed out five assists and made six steals to lead Rice.

Aaliyah Nezar shot herself out of a slump, connecting on six 3-pointers and finished with 19 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists to help Rice come back in the fouurth quarter and win the barn-burner.

Liviyah Nezar and Chloe Perry knocked down three points each on big 3-pointers from the corner in the frantic fourth quarter and Sloan Cadena and Caylin Jessie finished with two points each.

The Lady Dawgs fell behind early and trailed 16-9 after the first and 34-28 at halftime, but they closed the gap in the third quarter to 44-42 and then came through in the final seconds to win their best game of the season.

Rice will now travel to Texarkana to play in the Red River Hoopfest Friday and Saturday. Antonio Burks' team opens at 7:30 Friday night in the showcase game of the tournament when the Lady Dawgs face the Arkansas 3A defending state champs from Nashville. Rice will play Fouke, Arkansas at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
