Gastonia, Shelby area high school fall sports top performers for Week 9 of the 2023 season

This is a daily list of top performers from area teams, compiled courtesy of information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors and team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps and Twitter.

Wednesday, Oct. 11

Boys soccer

Aaron Lail, Lincolnton: Scored two goals in a 5-0 win over Bandys.

Luis Salas-Torres, Lincolnton: Scored a goal.

Dominic Sanchez, Lincolnton: Scored a goal.

Esteban Zuniga, Lincolnton: Scored a goal.

Max Martin, Shelby: Scored the game’s only goal in overtime to help the Golden Lions to a 1-0 win over Burns.

Carson McClure, South Point: Scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over South Point.

Volleyball

Tanlee Eley, Lincolnton: Had 12 assists in leading her team to a 3-0 win over West Caldwell.

Camellia Holland, Lincolnton: Led her team with 13 kills.

Lala Thomas, Lincolnton: Had a team-high 28 digs.

Girls tennis

Mackenzie Pendleton and Zoe McCoy, Burns: Won the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A tournament doubles championship.

Ardan Jones and Sydney Thomas, Crest: Won three matches during the Big South 3A tournament, including a 6-3, 6-2 win in the final to claim the league doubles title.

Emma Carver, North Lincoln: Claimed the Western Foothills 3A tournament singles title.

Natalie Gore and Lulu King, North Lincoln: Claimed the Western Foothills 3A tournament doubles title.

Anna Schweppe, Shelby: Claimed the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A singles title.

Girls golf

Leah Cole, Burns: Earned medalist honors with an 87 at Deer Brook Golf Club.

Cross country

BoysTucker Caulder, Lincoln Charter: Claimed top honors at the Mountain Island Charter Pink Invitational Run. He finished with a time of 17:32.80. The Eagles claimed top honors with a team score of 37. In addition to Caulder, the BrysoN Perry (third), Grant Gibbons (10th), Brock Pagel (11th), Adam Guffey (12th), Ryan Fay (13th), Ben Ruce (15th) and Blake Laney (16th) contributed to the effort.

Grayson Tillotson, Mountain Island Charter: Led his team with a fifth-place finish (20:04.30). He was one of four Raptors in the top 10, including D.J. Thomas (seventh), Ayden Donaldson (eighth) and Liam Berger (ninth) to help MICS finish second as a team at its Pink Invitational Run.

Damon Cook, Shelby: Claimed top honors in the 1A/2A race at the United Way Invitational (17:18.36). Teammate Steven Morgan also finished fourth.

Girls

Lorelai Reeb, Lincoln Charter: Led her team with a fifth-place finish (24:24.40) at the Mountain Island Charter Pink Invitational Run. She was one of five Eagles to finish in the top 10, which also included: Carson Bohen (sixth), Kenna Glidden (eighth), Eliza Lefler (ninth) and Lillian Reeb (10th).

Rylan Breath, Mountain Island Charter: Claimed top honors at the Mountain Island Charter Pink Invitational Run with a time of 22:06.60. She was joined in the top 10 by teammate Sullivan Strouse (seventh).

Tuesday, Oct. 10

Boys soccer

Bennett Ackerman, Gaston Day: Earned a hat trick in a 5-0 win over Gaston Christian.

Ben Hertle, Gaston Day: Scored a goal and assisted on another.

Trent Klinger, Gaston Day: Scored a goal.

Xavier Porter, Gaston Day: Earned a clean sheet in goal.

Alessandro Alvarado, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored two goals in a 10-1 win over Sugar Creek.

Nathan Esquivel, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored a goal.

Alexander Lagos, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored two goals.

Carlos Lozano, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored a goal.

Soren Mayhall, Piedmont Community Charter: Had two goals and two assists.

Henry Tippett, Piedmont Community Charter: Netted a goal and assisted on another.

Justin Wilcher, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored a goal.

Volleyball

Karyle Clay, Burns: Led her team with 10 kills in a 3-0 win over Shelby.

Alexis Martin, Burns: Had 11 digs and 23 assists.

Emily Allen, Cherryville: Had 10 assists, 10 kills and nine digs in a 3-1 win over Thomas Jefferson.

Taylor Digh, Cherryville: Had seven assists and 11 digs.

Railey Gidney, Cherryville: Had six kills.

Kate Mulvey, Cherryville: Had eight kills and eight digs.

Lexi McSwain, Cherryville: Had eight aces.

Erin Hamrick, Crest: Finished with 19 assists in her team’s 3-0 win over South Point.

Kensley Haneline, Crest: Had 11 kills

Anne Bradley Bing, Gaston Day: Had 17 kills, 30 assists, eight aces and 23 digs in a 3-1 win over Westminster Catawba.

Megan Brown, Gaston Day: Had 26 kills, 11 assists and 26 digs.

Carly Clagg, Gaston Day: Had 10 digs, two kills and two blocks.

Carlie Covelli, Gaston Day: Had 23 digs.

Clara Wallwork, Gaston Day: Had 17 digs, two blocks, two kills and two aces.

Alise Mayers, Highland Tech: Had 12 kills and 15 digs in a 3-0 win over East Gaston

Isabelle Simmons, Highland Tech: Had 26 assists.

Myracle Davis, Kings Mountain: Had eight kills and two blocks in a 3-0 win over Forestview..

Abigail Hedgepath, Kings Mountain: Had 19 assists and four digs.

Alexa Jones, Kings Mountain: Had seven digs, a block and five kills.

Camden Pasour, Kings Mountain: Had 16 assists, three kills and five digs.

Meile Songaila, Kings Mountain: Had 12 kills and a block.

Girls golf

Melony Hoffman, West Lincoln: Earned medalist honors after shooting a 40 on Tuesday. The Lady Rebels finished with an overall team score of 136, 25 shots ahead of second place Newton-Conover. Other West Lincoln contributors included Anysley Howard (44), Natalee Gentry (51), Jaylee Smith (52) and Calla Varner (52). The output also clinched the Catawba Valley 2A title for the Lady Rebels.

Monday, Oct. 9

Volleyball

Emilly Allen, Cherryville: Had eight kills and eight assists.

Krista Davis, Cherryville: Had four aces.

Taylor Digh, Cherryville: Had 10 digs.

Lexi McSwain, Cherryville: Had five aces.

Gwyn Neels, East Lincoln: Led the Mustangs with 16 kills, nine digs and two blocks in a 3-0 win over Statesville.

Stella Neels, East Lincoln: Had 30 assists and six digs.

Kaylon Perkins, East Lincoln: Had 11 digs.

Kendall Parsons, Gaston Christian: Had 22 assists in a 3-1 loss to SouthLake Christian.

Myracle Davis, Kings Mountain: Had 10 kills and three blocks in a 3-0 win over Legion Collegiate.

Mary Grace Hogue, Kings Mountain: Had nine kills and five digs.

Alexa Jones, Kings Mountain: Had 10 digs and a block.

Camden Pasour, Kings Mountain: Had 28 assists, 14 digs and four kills.
