Gabbert on track to start opener

Blaine Gabbert will miss his second straight preseason game since being named the Jacksonville Jaguars starter for the season opener, but he remains on track to start the Jags' regular season opener against Kansas City.

Gabbert suffered a hairline fracture of the thumb on his throwing hand against the New York Jets on Aug. 17, and after a solid performance in that game was given the starting nod over Chad Henne.

“Of course it’s going to be painful but at the same time, you’re always playing with things, nicks, bumps, dings and bruises,” Gabbert told the Florida Times-Union. “I’ll have to manage it.”

The Jaguars took measures to at least provide some insurance for the preseason finale against Atlanta, claiming former Chiefs quarterback Ricky Stanzi off waivers on Tuesday.

Jacksonville already has three quarterbacks on its roster - Gabbert, Henne and Mike Kafka.
