It’s the battle for the golden screwdriver as the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors come into the San Joaquin Valley looking to make it three straight over the Bulldogs. Fresno State is coming off one of the craziest wins in program history as the Dogs scored 15 points in the final 1:15 to come back and beat the San Diego State Aztecs. The Bulldogs will look to make it four straight wins.

Red Zone

Jake Haener made his return last week and looked a little rusty at times, especially in the red zone. Two late second half red zone turnovers could have cost the game for the Bulldogs. Now Haener looks for his first win over Hawaii in a Bulldog Uniform. If Haener and the Bulldogs are going to come out with a victory it is going to have to start with finishing drives  in the red zone. Fresno state currently ranks 117th in red zone percentage. Bulldogs have scored 17 touchdowns out of 36 red zone attempts. If Haener can protect the ball better and Bulldogs can capitalize on these drives then it could be a long night for the Rainbow Warriors.

Where is Jordan Mims?

With Haener coming back last week and the Dogs playing from behind most of the game Jordan Mims wasn’t much of a factor in the run game. This week that could change and it would be a great time to get Mims involved in the run game and give Haener less of a workout load. Hawaii has one of the worst rush defenses in the country giving up 336 ypg and giving up 6.1 yards per carry. Mims has only rushed for over 100 yards once in his last 5 games and the one time he did the Bulldogs put up 40+ points. It could be a big day for Jordan Mims.

Defense

There’s not much to say about this defense after that lights performance in the second half last week. The Bulldogs defense created five turnovers and three of them came in the second half. The Dogs did start off slow as the Aztecs converted on its first five third downs and few of them were 15 yards or more. I would like to see this defense get off the field early and stop giving up big plays on third down. If the Bulldogs defense can get off the field on third down and play like they did in the second half last week then the Bulldogs will be in prime position to snap a two game losing streak to Hawaii.

Prediction

Hawaii has struggled all year as a team as they are still going through a rebuilding phase. The Bulldogs are getting a lot of key players back and are on a roll with three straight wins. This game could be close early but I think the Bulldogs pull away in the second half.

Fresno State 45, Hawaii 13
