Freedom earns No. 1 seed in upcoming WIAA high school boys basketball playoffs
STEVENS POINT − Freedom is the lone boys basketball team in the Post-Crescent coverage area to receive a No. 1 seed for the upcoming WIAA boys basketball tournament, which begins with regional play Feb. 27.
The Irish (18-4) earned the top seed in the upper half of the Chilton sectional in Division 3. Clintonville (15-7) was a No. 2 seed.
Xavier (20-2) was given a No. 2 seed in the lower half of the same sectional with Brillion (19-3), the defending Division 3 state champion, a No. 3 seed.
St. Mary Catholic (16-7) is a No. 2 seed in Division 4.
There were some surprise seed designations, especially among Fox Valley Association teams, with FVA champ Oshkosh North given a third seed. Kaukauna (17-6) and Neenah (16-7) were given fifth and sixth seeds, respectively. Appleton North (16-6) received an eighth seed.
Here are the area regional matchups. Regional quarterfinals are Feb. 27, with semifinals March 1 and regional finals March 2.
Division 1
Regional quarterfinal: (18) Appleton West at (15) Holmen.
Regional semifinals: (9) Kimberly at (8) Appleton North; (12) Wausau West at (5) Kaukauna; (13) Appleton East at (4) Eau Claire Memorial; (14) Hortonville at (3) Superior; (11) Eau Claire North at (6) Neenah.
Division 2
Regional quarterfinals: (11) Tomah at (6) Seymour; (10) Green Bay West at (7) Menasha.
Regional semifinals: (7) La Crosse Central/(10) Sparta winner at (2) Fox Valley Lutheran; (5) New London at (4) Onalaska.
Division 3
Regional quarterfinals: (11) Winneconne at (6) Stanley-Boyd; (9) Chilton at (8) Denmark; (12) North Fond du Lac at (5) Little Chute; (11) Campbellsport at (6) Wrightstown.
Regional semifinals: (9) Northland Pines/(8) Amherst winner at (1) Freedom; (12) Tomahawk/(5) Wittenberg-Birnamwood winner at (4) Waupaca; Campbellsport/Wrightstown winner at (3) Brillion; (10) New Holstein/(7) Two Rivers winner at (2) Xavier; (11) Menominee Indian/(6) Sturgeon Bay winner at (3) Clintonville.
Division 4
Regional quarterfinals: (9) Manawa at (8) Valders; (12) Mishicot at (5) Shiocton; (10) Algoma at (7) Weyauwega-Fremont.
Regional semifinal: Algoma/Weyauwega-Fremont winner at (2) St. Mary Catholic.
