In free agency, Nashville Predators nab defenseman Luke Schenn, center Ryan O'Reilly

St. Louis Blues center Ryan O'Reilly (90) battles Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis (4) during the second period at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018.

Barry Trotz's first official day on the job as Nashville Predators general manager coincided with the first day of free agency in the NHL.

In line with how he's conducted business since he was hired in late February, Trotz wasted little time Saturday continuing "an organizational process that started at the trade deadline" when he agreed to terms with a pair of former Toronto Maple Leafs. One, 33-year-old defenseman Luke Schenn, will come to Nashville on a three-year, $8.25 million contract.

The other is 32-year-old Ryan O'Reilly. He signed a four-year, $18 million deal.

Not long after those moves, the Predators picked up 33-year-old forward Gustav Nyquist on a two-year, $6.37 million deal.

The moves came a day after the team bought out the contract of forward Matt Duchene and a week after it traded center Ryan Johansen to the Colorado Avalanche.

Schenn, the fifth overall pick in the 2008 draft, has 42 goals and 149 assists in 933 games spanning his 15-year-career. The 6-foot-2, 229-pounder finished last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. O'Reilly, a 6-1, 207-pounder, has 256 goals and 446 assists in 991 games spanning 14 seasons.

Schenn won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning, in 2020 and 2021. Ryan O'Reilly won the Conn Smythe in 2019, when he led the St. Louis Blues to the title.

The Predators also signed restricted free agent Cody Glass to a two-year, $5 million deal.

After the moves, the Predators had over $11.2 million in projected salary-cap space left, according to capfriendly.com.

In addition to the recent moves, the Predators also have done the following since Trotz's hire:
