Franklin County Week 8: Waynesboro blows second-half lead, Chambersburg wins OT thriller

Waynesboro let this one slip away in the end.

The Indians led 28-14 at the half and 31-21 in the fourth quarter, but two touchdown drives in the final seven minutes of the game propelled Mechanicsburg to a 35-31 victory Friday.

"It's been a constant thing with us," head coach Mark Saunders said. "We get a big league, but we don't maintain it. I don't know if it's inexperience, but we have to get it fixed."

Mechanicsburg got the ball at its own 20 with just over three minutes to go and went down the field to take the lead with just over a minute left.

An interception by quarterback Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt ended the game for the Wildcats.

"It's on me, I'm the head coach, I have to get it right, and we will get right," Saunders said. "Still got two games to play, and we can make a mark."

There were plenty of positives to take from this one for the Indians though.

Tank Benedict found the end zone three times. Nathan Nolan was strong on the ground and had two interceptions on defense. The defense played a strong first half.

But it wasn't enough.

"I love these guys, and I love where we're at," Saunders said. "I'd love to get more victories, but we got two more opportunities.

The next opportunity for Waynesboro (2-6) comes next week when it hits the road to take on Shippensburg.

Week 8 scoreboard

Chambersburg 34, CD East 33 (OT): A wild win on senior night for the Trojans.

Chambersburg (4-4) found itself down 14-0 early but fought back to make it 14-14 at the half. It kept the run going by taking a 24-14 lead in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers came back, taking a 27-24 lead on a long drive with 1:34 left.

But the Trojans weren't done, as they went down the field and set up Trever Luther to hit a game-tying 36-yard field goal to send it to overtime.

Chambersburg struck first in overtime off a 15-yard touchdown from Riley Harmon to Jake Folmar, but CD East answered.

However, the Panthers went for two and the win, but Rhaigeon Parker came up with an interception for the win.

Greencastle-Antrim 37, Gettysburg 20: It looked like the Blue Devils might join Waynesboro in blowing leads, but they hung on in the end.

Greencastle took a 30-6 lead in the third quarter, but two straight scores made it interesting at 30-20. But an Xzavier Ramsey touchdown, his third of the game, sealed it for the 6-2 Blue Devils.

East Pennsboro 34, Shippensburg 14: The Greyhounds took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter thanks to a Patrick Eichelberger touchdown, but it went downhill from there.

The high-powered Panthers rattled off 34 unanswered points to run away with the win. Shippensburg falls to 3-5.

Line Mountain 56, James Buchanan 20: Another first half deficit that was too much to overcome.

The Eagles had a 56-0 halftime lead, and the 20-0 second half advantage for the Rockets (1-7) wasn't enough to get them back into it.
