Fosston falls in Minnesota state tournament quarterfinals

Mar. 14—MINNEAPOLIS — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart jumped on Fosston from the start of the Minnesota state Class A girls basketball tournament and didn't look back.

Buffalo Lake built a double-digit lead in the first six minutes and Fosston wasn't albe to pull within single digits again during a 72-35 Greyhounds loss at the Maturi Pavilion on Thursday.

Lexi Mahlen led Fosston in scoring with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Her sister Brynlea Mahlen finished with six points, as did Teagan Duppong.

Buffalo Lake was paced by Rachel Kottke, who had 21 points behind 4-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

As a team, Buffalo Lake was 11-for-21 from 3-point range.

Fosston started the game with a pair of turnovers and both led to 3-pointers by Kottke as the Greyhounds quickly faced a 6-0 deficit.

Fosston outrebounded Buffalo Lake 34-27 thanks to 18 offensive rebounds.

But Fosston shot just 25.9 percent from the field on 54 shots compared to Buffalo Lake shooting 58.7 percent from the field on 46 shots.

Fosston committed 20 turnovers to 13 for Buffalo Lake.
