Former Seminoles, Giants star Buster Posey wants to add college degree to his resume

Buster Posey reminded his wife Kristen of an important milestone Monday.

"She is married to a college student," Posey said and laughed.

Posey, 36, is a Seminole, again.

The former Florida State and San Francisco Giants star catcher has reenrolled at FSU after 15 years.

Posey, who recently moved his family back to California after a return to his home state of Georgia, is taking two online courses (New Media and Social Change and Sports and Society) during the fall semester that started Monday.

"I've kicked the tires on this for awhile," Posey said a telephone interview Monday. "I've been going back and forth but finally committed to it a few months ago. I am a little nervous about it.

"I have to up my technological skills."

Buster Posey continues to follow his beloved Seminoles

Posey last attended FSU in 2008, when he won virtually every major award in college baseball during a junior season that saw him help the Seminoles return to the College World Series for the first time in eight years under coach Mike Martin.

Posey then spent his entire 12-year professional career with the Giants, from 2009 until his retirement following the 2021 season. He's the second player in MLB history, joining Pete Rose, to win Rookie of the Year, a League MVP and three World Series championships.

In September 2022, Posey joined the 30-member ownership group of the Giants and serves on its board of directors.

Initially a finance major at FSU, Posey is on a year-track to earn an Interdisciplinary Social Science major.

According to the university's academic program guide, the major provides an "integrated social science perspective on social issues, public policy and public affairs."

Posey chuckled and said he had a successful first day, navigating the sign-in process and reviewing class syllabuses of what's expected of students over the course of the fall semester.

Joking aside, Posey said he never dreaded school and is serous about joining the ranks of former Seminoles who returned to earn their degree. In fact, Posey was just as impressive in the classroom as he was on the baseball diamond, earning first-team COSIDA Academic All-American honors in 2008.

Posey added he wants to be a good role model for his children, too.

"It's going to take some work, but it would certainly be (an achievement) to feel good about," said Posey, who returned to Dick Howser Stadium last March for the first time in more than a decade as FSU retired Posey's No. 8 jersey.

Posey and wife Kristen, married in 2009, have four children.
