Former Seahawk Jadeveon Clowney remains NFL’s best available free agent

Free-agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has yet to find himself a home in the NFL ahead of the 2020 regular season. The Seattle Seahawks have been unable to woo Clowney back to the roster and other teams reported to have had interest have been equally unsuccessful in courting the edge defender to their clubs.

Still unsigned with training camps in full swing, Clowney remains the league’s top available free agent.

“It’s possible that even after a 2019 season with the Seahawks in which he proved to be an eminent disruptor when healthy, Clowney finds himself in a position where NFL teams have decided his per-year value, and it’s not exactly in line with what Clowney thinks it is,” writes Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar. “Last season, Clowney managed just 4.5 sacks including the postseason, but that wasn’t the whole story. He played through core muscle injuries and still racked up 58 total pressures and 29 stops in a Seattle system that asked him to be more of a traditional end than the multi-gap and multi-level ‘spinner’ role he played in Houston.”

Clearly, the coronavirus pandemic put a bit of a damper on this year’s free agency frenzy, but that alone doesn’t explain why Clowney has yet to find a suitable contract offer.

“Clowney may have to wait until the regular season begins for his market to settle and decide itself,” Farrar continues. “But in the ideal circumstance, he can absolutely be a force multiplier as a pass-rusher and run-stopper.”
