Former Royal, World Series leader Eric Hosmer retires at 34

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer, who led the franchise to the 2015 World Series, is hanging up his cleats.

The 34-year-old announced his decision along with his new project, The Diggin’ Deep Podcast, on social media Wednesday morning.

“The playing days are unfortunately over but I’m committed to giving back to the baseball community,” Hosmer posted on X.

Hosmer was waived by the Chicago Cubs in May after batting .234 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 94 plate appearances since signing with them at the beginning of the season.

The South Miami, Florida native spent seven seasons with the Royals in the majors after being drafted by Kansas City as a third overall pick in 2008. Hosmer hit .284 as a Royal with 127 home runs and 566 RBI.

The 2016 All-Star signed his big deal with the San Diego Padres in 2017. It was an eight-year, $144 million deal but Hosmer was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2022 and was released at the end of that season.

With fellow 2015 Royals members Lorenzo Cain and manager Ned Yost being inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame in 2023, Hosmer’s time to be inducted will surely be coming soon.
