Former Patriots safety Patrick Chung charged with assault and battery on a family member

Former Patriots safety Patrick Chung was arrested on Tuesday and charged with assault and battery on a family member and for vandalizing property, according to court documents. Chung was arraigned on Wednesday inside Quincy District Court.

According to David Taub, the director of communications for Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey, Chung pleaded not guilty. The Commonwealth requested a $10,000 cash bail and bail conditions of staying away, having no contact with the victim, no abuse of the victim and GPS monitoring. Prior to the arraignment, the victim was issued a 209a restraining order, which prohibits Chung from making any contact.

Chung will be back in Quincy District Court on Jan. 7, 2022 for a pretrial conference.

According to the criminal complaint from Quincy District Court, Chung, who lives in Norton, Massachusetts, was arrested in Milton. The document has the name of the victim redacted but alleges that Chung on Tuesday “did assault and beat” the person, who is identified as “a family or household member.”

The charge carries a sentence of up to 2½ years in prison, a fine of no more than $5,000 or both.

On the charge of vandalizing property, Chung allegedly “did intentionally, willfully and maliciously or wantonly, paint, mark, scratch, etch or otherwise mark, inure, mar, deface or destroy personal property” of the victim.

The document states that the penalty for that is up to three years in a state prison; or up to two years in the house of correction; or a fine or no more than $1,500; or three times the value of the property damaged or both imprisonment plus a fine, plus restitution.

In 2019, Chung was indicted in New Hampshire on a charge of felony cocaine possession. On Jan. 13, 2020, those charges were dismissed under several conditions. One was "Chung must remain on good behavior for two years in which he doesn’t commit any crimes (felony or misdemeanor) or major motor vehicle offenses.”

A three-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots, Chung retired this offseason. Drafted by the Patriots in 2009, Chung played in New England for 10 seasons. He made one stop in Philadelphia in 2013. The strong safety last played for the Pats in 2019 and opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19.
