With 122 3-pointers made during the 2023 season and counting, former Oregon star and New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu broke the WNBA’s single-season record for 3-pointers in a season in a game Thursday night against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Ionescu was two 3s away from the record entering Thursday and hit her first 3-pointer early in the third quarter. Moments later, Ionescu broke the record with a shot from the left corner.

That shot broke a 17-year record held by the Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi, set in 2006.

The fourth-year pro is a two-time all-star and broke the all-time WNBA and NBA 3-point contest record earlier this summer, knocking down 25 of 27 shot attempts for a record total of 37.

Entering Thursday night, Ionescu is averaging 17 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game, and a career-low 2.5 turnovers per game on one of the WNBA’s top teams.

Before being drafted No. 1 overall in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Ionescu was shattering records in Eugene. The four-year standout was the first player, male or female, in NCAA history with at least 2,000 career points (2,562), 1,000 career rebounds (1,040), and 1,000 career assists (1,091). Ionescu also graduated as the NCAA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles with 26, and Oregon’s all-time leader in points, assists, 3-point field goals, and double-figure scoring games.

The Liberty close out their regular season Sunday in Brooklyn against the Mystics, having already clinched a postseason berth.
