FAMU DRS announces interim football coach as former coach takes basketball job at Godby
It has been a whirlwind two days for Alex Williams.
A day after resigning as head football coach at FAMU DRS, Williams is the new Godby High boys basketball coach.
Godby Athletic Director Teresa Gunter confirmed Williams' hiring to the Tallahassee Democrat Tuesday. She said the Cougars had 12 applicants for the vacancy.
Williams replaces former coach Andonte Gennie, recently named an assistant coach for Florida A&M women's basketball.
"Coach Gennie took a role at FAMU, which we of course encouraged, and we knew we wanted to hire someone with the same goals and vision he had in place," Gunter said. "We thought what coach Williams wanted to bring to Godby was in line with what coach Gennie had started and envisioned for the program."
Williams takes over a Cougars program that went 12-14 last season. It made an appearance in the regional quarterfinals, losing to Ribault 95-61.
Williams spent the last season and a half with the FAMU DRS football program, going 3-11 during his time with the Baby Rattlers.
Former FAMU and FAMU DRS football player Willie Ferrell is now the interim head coach at FAMU DRS.
This will be Williams's first high school basketball coaching job, but he is no stranger to the game.
Willaims was a basketball player at Godby for his first two years of high school before transferring to FAMU DRS. All though his athletics career took a different path, Williams said he's happy to be home and working with his true passion.
"This is Alex Williams going back home, I'm going to the root, to the cornerstone," Williams told the Democrat. "Basketball has always been my passion, If anybody knows me and knows my history as an athlete they know what basketball means to me."
