Former Abilene High, Baylor standout Abram Smith signs with Minnesota Vikings

Abilene High grad Abram Smith will get another shot in the NFL.

Smith signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday after a workout with the team, the XFL communications department said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Smith, an all-XFL selection at running back, helped the D.C. Defenders reach the XFL Championship game on May 13 in San Antonio, where they lost to the Arlington Renegades 35-26.

Smith led the XFL in rushing with 791 yards and seven touchdowns on 158 carries. He also had 17 catches for 91 yards.

The 2016 Abilene High grad set Baylor’s single-season rushing record with 1,621 yards — good for fifth nationally — and scored 12 TDs his senior year with the Bears in 2021.

The second-team All-Big 12 pick also set a school record with nine 100-yard games — all after making the switch from linebacker the year before.

Smith signed with Baylor as a running back coming out AHS. He is the Eagles’ all-time rusher with 5,019 yards, and he also has the program’s all-time record for TDs (73).

The Vikings worked out Thursday night at their training camp in Eagan, Minnesota. Their first preseason game is Aug. 10 in Seattle.
