Football: A good start for NLS

Sep. 29—NEW LONDON — New London-Spicer scored 16 points in the first 5 minutes, 26 seconds ion to jump out to a 16-0 lead against Watertown-Mayer before inclement weather put the Wildcats' homecoming football game on pause on Friday.

NLS and the Royals will continue play, which was at 6:34 remaining in the first quarter, on Monday evening. A time is to be determined.

"Hopefully we can keep it going," Wildcats head coach Chad Gustafson said of his team's strong start.

Brody Duke got the Wildcats off on the right foot. The senior returned the opening kickoff 78 yards to propel NLS to a 7-0 lead.

The Wildcats forced Watertown-Mayer to a three-and-out on its first drive before a bad snap on the Royals' punt eventually went out of the back of the end zone for a safety, giving NLS a 9-0 lead with 9:43 to play.

NLS' first drive of the game began on its own 31-yard line with 9:37 remaining in the first quarter.

Wildcats senior running back Mason Delzer took back-to-back handoffs before junior quarterback Blake Schultz connected with senior running back Ethan Holme for a first down.

Delzer then had back-to-back carries. His first went for 11 yards to give NLS a first down before he broke loose for a 53-yard touchdown to give the Wildcats a 16-0 lead with 6:34 remaining.

The inclement weather postponed the game before NLS kicked off for the second time.

Delzer had 71 yards on four carries before the game's postponement.

Inclement weather has pushed a Class AAA top 10 matchup between Dassel-Cokato and Litchfield to 1 p.m. Saturday at Litchfield.

Dassel-Cokato (4-0) is the top team in Class AAA. Litchfield (3-1) is No. 10.
