Following Sweet 16 run, Brad Brownell and Clemson agree to six-year, $15 million extension

Fresh off one of the best seasons in school history, Clemson basketball and head coach Brad Brownell have agreed to a six-year, $15 million extension that runs through the 2023-24 season, the school announced Thursday morning.

Clemson made its fourth-ever Sweet 16 last season

Brownell, 49, joined Clemson in 2010 after successful stints at UNC Wilmington and Wright State. In his first season with the program, Brownell guided the Tigers to 22 wins and an NCAA tournament berth, the program’s fourth straight appearance at the Big Dance.

Following Brownell’s debut season, though, the program struggled and failed to qualify for six straight NCAA tournaments. Brownell was thought to be on the hot seat heading into this past season, and his Tigers came into the year ranked 13th in the ACC preseason poll. With his back against the wall, Brownell produced one of the finest campaigns in program history. Clemson won 25 games, tying a program record, and finished tied for third in the ACC regular season standings. In the NCAA tournament, Clemson knocked off 12-seed New Mexico State and then routed 4-seed Auburn to reach its first Sweet 16 since 1997.

Brownell is 316-198 in his 16 years of coaching. He’s 149-113 at Clemson, good for third-most wins in program history.
