Floydada boys basketball makes final run to hold off Farwell in region quarterfinal

With the battles they've endured all season, the Floydada Whirlwinds wouldn't be fazed in crunch time.

In a contest that saw six lead changes in the second half, it was Floydada that landed the final blow. After falling behind by three, the Winds finished the game on an 11-2 run to down No. 21 Farwell 59-53 in a Region I-2A quarterfinal Tuesday at the Rip Griffin Center.

Corey Stancell's drive cut the Steers' deficit to 55-53 with about two minutes left, but Floydada's defense carried the team to the finish line.

"We've been through the gauntlet all season long," Winds coach Karson Hembree said. "All those games have prepared us for these moments. We haven't shown any panic, anything like that. We've had big-time players step up in big-time games. We've just got to keep it rolling now."

Floydada advances to its second consecutive regional tournament. Before last season, the program hadn't reached that point since 2008. Both years the Winds took out Farwell in a competitive ballgame.

The Steers opened the game on a 10-3 run but fell behind by as many as 14 in the second quarter. The pendulum continued to swing as Farwell took the lead with a 13-2 spurt to start the second half. Floydada managed one field goal and trailed 42-41 entering the fourth quarter.

"They're a great basketball with some really good defensive skill," Hembree said. "For us to be able to battle back after a bad third quarter like that just kind of shows the grit of the guys and where we're going from here."

Floydada's Tyrean Henderson led all scorers with 18 points and Aiden Treviño added 15. Three others scored at least seven points for the Winds.

"That's the beauty of what we've got right now," Hembree said. "We've got five guys on the floor at any given point that can go and score. Tonight it was Ty; last week it was Sergio Valadez. We'll just see who steps up the next time we play."
